Narissa Ross, a Class of 2017 dental student in UAB's School of Dentistry, describes the school's weeklong Health Careers Opportunity Program, where middle and high school students learn about oral hygiene and prepare posters and presentations as if they were teaching pre-kindergarten and kindergarten children proper oral hygiene techniques. Students showcased their new-found knowledge and creativity at the culmination of the program by presenting their projects.
The HCOP program identifies, recruits and enables economically and educationally disadvantaged youth (grades 6-12) to become more academically prepared, and have exposure to and become equipped with the financial and research tools to navigate their way to a health career. The exposure to multiple health disciplines comes through lectures, shadowing, hands on activities, rotational experiences, and immersion into the field of primary care.
