I usually fish from a boat but I like watching people fish from rocks and jetties. I subscribed.

Sabikis can be a _great_ way to not only tear into a school or perch or jacksmelt on the move, but also figure out where in the water column they're hanging out (in case you switch to a traditional hi/lo). I also learned that if you're short on cut bait, tipping your sabikis with small cut-up bits of gulp that's no longer good on its own (beat up sandworm, shrimp, mullet, etc.. ) can also ring that dinner bell! Glad you've been out enjoying the flatter swells around here while they last 🙂

The key to making your small bits of sardine last longer on your hook is to wrap it neatly in latex cotton. Well that's how we use here it in south africa

I'll have to look into that. thanks for the tip.

Well looks like the end of a perfect fishing day. From sea weed to smelt. Great haul. Hope they all tasted as good as they looked. Until next time. Thanks for sharing. That terrain looked pretty rugged. Not easy to maneuver all the stuff you were toting. I assume you got home safely. The video being the proof.

I ended up giving the entire haul to our good friend Renel. I cleaned them right away (the same night) down at the Pillar Point cleaning table, and then put them in the freezer. I gave them to him two days later. He said they were good and was happy to see some freshly caught fish on his table, as he hasn't had time for fishing himself for quite awhile. I cook up the next batch. This time of year I am highly likely run into another 5 to 6 schools of them before the winter. And you're right. If the video gets posted, then I made it out of there all right!

I went to rockaway just two days after. Used a sabiki with shrimp and caught my limit of silvers, and 20+ that I released. The bite is OOONNN!!

Yeah, the ocean currents finally calmed down after a few weeks of some rough currents. I just drove by Sharp Park on the way home and it is still looking good. Pelicans were diving about 100 yards north of the pier about 3 hours ago.

Pacifica Fisherman Yeah, the anchovies are going nuts! And people have been getting walleyes, sardines, silvers, and kingfish at the pier! I was there and I was getting Pompano! It’s crazy!
@PacificaFisherman

Awesome. Yeah, you don't see Pompano too much at the pier. They showed up for a couple of days last year as well. It probably would be a good time to catch some thresher sharks as well.

Wonder if you salting the shrimp for a couple of days (to toughen them up) likely to stay on the hook better. Would the salt distract?
@PacificaFisherman
5 жыл бұрын
I've tried the salting with mussel bait before, and it does toughen it up, but I found that after an afternoon of putting the salted bait on the hook, the skin on my hands was pealing off! Nowadays, when bait fishing, I just try to get the bait fresh as possible (pick it up at the local fish market) and go with that. Another way of holding baits on the hook better is something that comes in a little tube called "Miracle Thread Bait Saver". I think I was using some of it in the beginning of the Part I "Jack Smelt" video to hold the sardine on the hook. I got mine from Marque at Coastside # 2.

Check out the following two sections of the CDF Finfish Fishing Regulations (see link below) 27.60 & 28.45, and know that there are four different types of Smelt shown in their Finfish Fishing Regulations book: www.eregulations.com/california/fishing/saltwater/finfish-fishing-regulations/

I always fish for a meal. I wouldn't consider myself a sports fisherman, I do it to keep in touch with my more primitive instincts, i.e. the need to hunt and gather in a more basic primitive existence.

@@PacificaFisherman That's good, I only fish for meals too, but for certain type of fish, because some fish has a strong sense of smell.

I always do the scaling and remove the head and guts at the pier or some other cleaning table (Pillar Point) before bringing them into the house. That helps to keep the smell to a minimum and also keeps rotting guts from smelling up the rest of the meat. I then fillet the smelt & remove the skin (another video I put out) and then fry them. They are quite tasty. I video taped the battering and the frying this time (this past weekend), and will put that video out later this week.

I went to Mori's Point early yesterday morning. I got there before the sun was above the horizon and there was a lot of fog, so I couldn't tell from the look out point that there was a ton of seaweed in the water. Had I been harvesting seaweed, it would have been a great day for it. So I went home and ate lunch. I then took the trail behind the Manor Safeway down to the Beach there, and the tide was smooth at first, but after I got down there it just kept getting stronger and stronger. A lot stronger than what was forecast for the day. I ended on top of those big rocks they put down there to keep the big winter waves from chewing away at the sandstone cliffs. That gave me the leverage to get it out there a little farther. I catch a few small silver perch, but I didn't keep any of them. I didn't see any other kind of action. There was a guy on the north side as well throwing a buck tail for a few hours, and he didn't hit anything either.

Would squid work? It's cheaper than shrimp.
@PacificaFisherman
5 жыл бұрын
Squid actually works better because it is rubbery, and stays on the hook longer, and considering the way Smelt go about eating, they hook up much faster. I had almost brought some squid as well that day, but didn't, so I had to make due with the shrimp once the anchovies were done.
@PacificaFisherman

But when the perch start showing up, you want sand crabs or shrimp. Perch don't care for the squid as much, but I have caught them on squid before. I tend to catch more perch with the squid legs, and when you shake the line with the legs on a hook, it really attracts their attention. But smelt will bite on everything I've ever tried. Not picky at all.

I just stopped by the Pacific Super market in Daly City on the way home tonight. Picked up an assortment of bait for fishing tmrw: Sardines, Shrimp and Squid. Great prices there, I only spent a little over $5 for the whole lot: about 10 sardines, 15 to 20 shrimp and 15 to 20 squid. About one pound and a half of bait.
