this one's been haunting me for months
back in November or so, a friend sent it to me with the prologue that he'd listened to Gordon Bok's Schooners album about a million times and had somehow never quite managed to fall into this song before but, for one reason or another, it had grabbed him on the latest listen.
he hadn't sent a link (the album isn't streaming), so I'd made a note to go find it later and had forgotten. a few days later, he sent me another song from the album which was also brilliant (The Death Ship, if you're curious), and so I went and found myself a copy and tossed it on while doing some other work.
Schooner Ellenmore came on and stopped me in my tracks. Bok's unaccompanied delivery - sturdy and gentle and sad - is compelling even before you start piecing together the story, and the poetry of some of the lines is just utterly gutting. I listened to it three or four times on a loop without a second thought.
I sent my friend a message to the effect of "Schooner Ellenmore is incredible" and he responded immediately with "you can see why I was so excited about it," and I had to scroll back through our conversation to piece together that this was in fact the song he'd sent me first and I'd forgotten the name so I suppose in a way we both came to it honestly.
that friend sings a beautiful version now (he sings a beautiful version of a lot of things), and I've finally just now sort of managed to get the melody under my feet. it's not a particularly complicated melody, and it is the same for most of the verses, but for whatever reason, it's been a bit squirrely to nail down.
quick cameo by the Fluff in this one as well, if you're mostly here to see my cats (entirely reasonable and I applaud it)
thanks as always. see you next time.
