I bought this knife about 3 1/2 years ago for around $30 on Amazon, and it was well worth the money. I did, however, make a few minor modifications. First, I didn't like the black coating. It isn't durable and will start getting scratched and scuffed up from the first use, so, I took off the handle scales and removed the coating with paint remover (there are a number of KZitem videos that show how to do this). The jimping on the handle is rather severe, so using a sanding drum on my drill press, I took it down a little. It still has a nice grip, but, is easier on the hands than when it came from the factory. Finally, I forced a patina on the blade with vinegar (again, check out videos on how to do this). I use the knife primarily for batoning wood for my smoker, and it's a heavy duty workhorse. It holds its edge for a long time.

I got mine in 2018 and I still have it. I always felt like the frontier line was the super budget competitor to the becker line from kabar. The 36 and 37 always reminded me of the bk2 and bk7. Obviously they're not the same but I feel like they took inspiration from them when they came up with the designs for the frontier line.

I bought the schf36 after watching several review vids including yours. First I want to say i enjoy your channel and your vids are very informative. Now about the knife. It's a beast! Except that the tip broke during a spoon carving attempt using pine...soft pine. I dont abuse my knives but I do expect them to hold up to standard bushcrafting tasks around a campfire. So batoning and chopping are out of the question if a quarter inch piece of steel cant stand up to pine. I contacted the manufacturer using the info provided in the box. I haven't heard back from them so not impressed with customer service. Thanks again for the great vids!

@RevanJJ
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I’m scared to buy since it went corporate. Just was about to then read the recent reviews on amazing. Almost every other one was about the blade breaking. Some are saying it’s because the company is allowing them to rust under that coating, others are saying the hardness makes it basically a glass knife - sharp but easily broken. I’ve seen a lot of pic of them snapped in half and tips broken. One man said the tip broke while carving a spoon too. I am going to start reviewing knives as well even though done better by channels like this, but I have so many and just love them and survival/bushcrafting that it seems fun to do. I wanted to get that to be my first to review, but I’d hate to have it snap half way through. People in reviews also say they can’t get any customer service from schrade and have to call Amazon to ask for help. I think I’ll take the risk.

Hi Bryan, Despite the age of this video I believe my comment is relevant and I wanted to pass along the information to your viewers. Yesterday, 10 March 2019 I sent this letter to Schrade via e-mail: “Hello everyone. While teaching how to process wood as part of a Winter Wilderness Emergency Care course the blade of an Schrade SCHF36 broke at the edge. The knife was being used reasonably and within the accepted limits of a bush-craft knife and was well maintained. It was approximately 14-months old and used specifically for teaching three classes per year. (Fall and winter) One possible factor, (?) when the knife was being worked the temperature was in the low teens. Despite the damage the knife continued to be used during the weekend processing wood, cutting 1/2 in NFPA compliant rescue rope, camp chores and fire starting. Nicely done... I am requesting a replacement. Please advise. Thank you, take care, Garv PS: I have a few pictures.” Less than 24-hours later I received a notice that a replacement knife was on the way. That is outstanding customer service and I want the viewers of this video to know that Schrade stands by its products and is a company you can count on. I teach several outdoor skill-sets professionally for a major Federal alphabet and own high-end bush-craft/survival knives; I own beaters and I own and use solid day-to-day knives like the Schrade SCHF36 when teaching. Some may argue that the knife should not have broken; it did, stuff happens. What is important is that the knife was promptly replaced without any nonsense. I appreciate to opportunity to comment; thank you and take care. Garv

I have to say your new and improved rationalization for throwing is almost as impressive as the blade! Based on some reviews, I anticipate grinding that off once I get mine, so as to make them extended-use-friendly.

Just to add to this review. I made the mistake of buying a schrade knife a Old Timer Pro Hunter Full Tang Fixed Blade Knife (TB-PHW) Based on that neither I nor any of my aquaintances will be purchasing schrade knves in future. I'm in the UK land bought mine form a dealer here BA Blades. The very first time I used this knife I used it to strip the bark from a piece of wood I was making into thumbstick. All I did with it was strip the bark the blade was marked on the edge which was a surprise more so was was that the Grind Line where the ground bevel meets the cheek was stained. The gy who made this video the the video for that knife and other schrade knives used his Pro Hunter to baton cut and shave wood with no detrimantal effects. But even in close up you would not be able to see the damage done on my knife with the video's magnification. I contacted the dealer who's rep said he'd get back to me. He asked for pictures I sent them. He did not get back to me to I got back to him. He said he would have to see what schrade said, 2 more months and I have heard nothing. We won't buy Schrade again or from PJS (UK) Ltd Trading as BA Blades in Kent.

Great review as always! I am really excited about this knife, have one coming in the mail this week. I first saw it on Mike Bartons's channel and it looked like a really solid knife at an amazing price. I recently bought the BK-16 and love it but have been wishing it was a bit bigger but not as big as a Bk-2. I think this knife is going to sell like hot cakes because it appears to fill that gap and at a killer price, with a sharpener and firesteel to boot!. I love the usable choil on this one as well (as in not just for sharpening purposes). I am curious to see how well these are tempered and also how their 1095 compares to the K-bar's subtly toothy 1095 CroVan. How has the edge been holding up for you ?

Are you certain the SCHF36M is stainless? If so, why does mine have black traction coating on it? Will have to email them to get a definitive answer. I've never seen them put black coating on a stainless knife before. If they did...what sense did that make?
@SurvivalOnPurpose
9 жыл бұрын
Russell says it is 8cr13mov. He also said it has a different coating than the 1095 versions but it looks the same to me on the ones I got. I've already stripped the micarta ones so I can't do a side by side. I'm pretty sure it's stainless because I can't get it to take a patina or change color at all. I tried etching solution but you can barely tell a difference. I also asked about the possibility of offering a 1095/micarta version but there are no plans to do so right now.

HighCarbonSteel Love I like them both and I have a really hard time with questions like this because it is really a personal decision. I am not necessarily looking for the "1 tool option" but do like them both and really enjoyed both of your reviews (and all of your reviews for that matter). I might just have to eventually get them both, even though I really don't "need" another knife :) Look forward to talking with you again soon, Bryan! -Dave

Better is so relative. They are 2 very different designs and I like them both. I will say just wait till you see this next Schrader Saturday video. I think you may have another contender.

I would go to their website at taylorbrandsllc.com and get in touch with them. There may be a number on the website, I don't remember it. I'm not at my computer right now and by the time I get there this message will be buried under hundreds of others. If you want to send me a private message I'll get the phone number for you.

Hey, Brian: I really appreciate your reviews, but I got to ask you--How in the world do you control the rotation of the knife when you flick your wrist as you throw it? I learned to throw by keeping my wrist straight when I throw. It kind of cuts down on power, but I can predictably control the rotation as it flies. It looks like you get two turns when you throw it by the handle (I may have seen that in your F42 review), and you get a lot of zip on it, but if I flicked my wrist like you do, I have no idea how fast it would turn. Any advice is appreciated.

Which is better the SCHF36 or 37? I really do need a dependable larger knife as I have many mora & other smaller knives that do a great job at handling the small to medium taste, but have a need for one larger knife in my hiking/bug out bag. Thanks .

Honestly, I can't say now. I have not had any contact with them since the Taylor Family sold the company so I don't know about the quality. As for which model? Between the 2 I prefer the 37.

Survival On Purpose, being only of the few who have handled both the 36 and the 36M, which handle scales do you prefer, the Micarta or TPE? Do you know if Schrade is going to offer the scales aftermarket? Thanks!

Thomas Reed I The TPE are decent, but I prefer the micarta. And I haven't heard anything about aftermarket scales but I think it would be a great idea.

The 36 is a nice size, Hey Brian do you think these new ones have a better grip then the schf9, if you worked for an hour straight chopping and shaving and cutting which would ya choose? 36,37 or the 9. Remember my hands are depending on your answer LOL.

Airik1111 I personally prefer the newer ones, but I have medium size hands. The SCHF9 has a pretty beefy grip.

Hey friend, good review videos. Just found your channel while searching for some Schrade reviews. If I may ask, which knife do you prefer, this SCHF 36 or the SCHF 26 you reviewed here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/w4Wcx5Wsf4Ceh44 These two are the ones I've narrowed my search down to, now I just need to pick. Perhaps a comparison video?
@SurvivalOnPurpose
9 жыл бұрын
L.D. Johnson Wow! That's a tough question. they are both excellent choices, in my opinion. It really depends on your personal preferences. A comparison video is a great idea but it would be a while before it went live, as my schedule is pretty booked. So why don't I review the major differences?The SCHF 26 is a recurve blade of 8Cr13Mov Stainless Steel with a fairly smooth coating. The SCHF36 is a straight blade with a choil of 1095 Carbon Steel and a traction coating (which I don't really like, but it's easy to strip)I should note that the SCHF36 is also available in 8Cr13Mov with Micarta handle slabs (the SCHF36M version). I really like the micarta handles on these.Honestly, pretty much everything else is very close to the same so it depends on the steel and blade shape. I'm "old school" enough to prefer the straight blade to the recurve, although I do really like the SCHF26.To add one more wrinkle to the equation, I have to tell you that I like the SCHF37 even better than both of these. It's bigger but it just feels really good to me.Not sure I really answered your question but I hope this helps.
