If you're looking for some good beginner level space opera, you should consider the Lensman series by Doc Smith. I know it gets a lot of criticism, but they are fun stories and easy to read. And as space opera, no one should be worried too much about scientific realism. Other good beginner books are Heinlein's less political books - Have Space Suit Will Travel, Podkayne of Mars, Glory Road, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, etc.

Also the “Skylark” series. Doc Smith did a lot more basically good Science Fiction than he is given credit for today.

Nice video, Simon! If you decide to do another "Science Fiction for Beginners" episode, I'd recommend "Hawksbill Station" by Robert Silverberg. IMO it is a tragically underrated novel, well-written and full of ideas. Although written back in the sixties, it has held up very well over the years.

I appreciate you addressing Cards problematic behaviour in your video. You bring great scifi content to the booktube community. So happy to find another scifi creator recommend great books that are both classic and often diverse in nature. (And omg yes Bradbury totally predicated Twitter!)

Hello, there’s been a long time that Idon’t read Sci fi (except the wayfarer series, a few months ago). But I was curious, what about Ursula Le Guin? You don’t consider recomend any of her novels for begginers? (sorry for the errors, I’m typing on the phone and also not my native language- autocorretor keeps trying to correct to portuguese 😆).

I love Le Guin! To be honest, the only reason I didn't put her on this is list is because I'll probably do a full video about her science fiction someday soon.

So well stated about Orson Scott Card! I really loved Ender's Way and never would have guessed the author to be toxically homophobic. In fact I didn't, so I bought the audiobook! Second hand stores are the way but the politics of audiobooks make things more difficult. Libraries sometimes have them though they have to buy them first! His homophobia goes back to religion again- yikes!

"I haven't read the Martian Chronicles at all, which meant they were never a real contender." A friendly suggestion - read it. And then add it to your list.

Shelly's book was brilliant and the creation of Victor the mad was the first hot Goth guy if you go by the actual discription and literal first addition cover. He was pretty and not at all frightening. It's sad the movies like totally ruined the point and him. Likewise Jekyll and Hyde is a fascinating fantasy novel about transformation of a magical nature combined a bit with Alchemy I believe. But the movies certainly didn't get that right either. It was about Victorian suppression not a bro with 2 personalityes. Bellatrix

Interestingly, I have read just about everything by Asimov, but I wouldn't touch Orson Scott Card with a ten foot pole.

Completely agree. Running your current PC values against the author’s beliefs is more than a bit dishonest. Everyone who disapproves of something is not afraid of that thing.
