One of the most fascinating places where you can find dwarf elephants fossils is Ghar Dalam (Dalam cave) in beautiful Malta. Hundreds of thousands years ago was the biggest flooding plain of the island. And being very found about Minoan civilization I traveled often to Crete where are also a lot of interesting pleistocene fossils sites

The stories of our Earth just never cease to amaze me. When, in the 9th grade, I could be in a class where science was taught to me, I was hooked. I quickly saw tie-ins between Nature and science. Years before that, I wandered woods, fields, and streams to observe the natural world, and fiddled with my chemistry set. While in the woods, I was out from under Mom’s feet. But, while playing “chemist”, I started to learn about how to refinish wooden furniture. OOPS! Thank you for educating me further. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

I was recently in Greece last month and I was amazed by how much geology played a role in the construction of both the parthenon and palace of Knossos. Great video, just one correction: the current Ice Age (Cenozoic Ice Age/glaciation) began 34 million years ago, the last 2.58 million years are just the latest phase of glaciation (Quaternary/Pleistocene glaciation). What changed 2.58 million years ago was that in the Northern Hemisphere extensive ice sheets were formed, when before they were mostly restricted to the Southern Hemisphere/Antarctica. The cause was continental drift, mainly the closing of the land bridge between North and South America, which redirected oceanic circulation around the equator to the poles, leading to global cooling and upwelling in the oceans.

I've been starting to suspect that the extinction of all of these magnificent, enormous creatures forced our species to fill a spiritual void with fantastic and mythological beasts in their place. Our obsession with these animals seems to have gone beyond merely needing to prey on them for survival, as indicated by cave art depictions, where one gets the impression that shamanism and obsession with acquiring the animals' powers was involved on a deep, visceral level. When the megafauna disappeared, we transferred our need for shamanism and transcending our human form to dragons, demons, water spirits, sky gods, trolls, giants, etc. Some people want to return to those ancient religious belief systems, because they're allegedly closer to fulfilling some of our innate psychological needs for something larger than ourselves than modern movies, fantasy novels, video games, and other forms of make-believe; but really, even by the Neolithic, we were starting to lose touch with our original reality, even if we tended to believe in the myths more than we do today, where we accept that they are fictions. We shouldn't forget that far earlier in our history, we regularly interacted with awe-inspiring beasts; they were very real.

Yes, islands must have offered a special degree of relief from what must have been a pervasive effort to avoid megafauna predators as much as could be practical.
