I tried putting frozen beverages in my backpack to keep my core temp down, in 95°F temps..
I definitely think the icepacks helped. I've also gotten faster recently. Can you tell? Strava says I'm averaging 9mph now.
I felt great on this ride. I was going faster than normal without maxing myself. And I'm having to reevaluate how I take turns at my new speeds.
My goal is to be able to do two laps of SCIP for the upcoming Soldier Creek Showdown race. But maintain good speed the whole time.
I've got a lot of practice to do.
But heat intolerance plays a huge limiting factor for me.
Excessive sweating cause my body is dumping moisture to try to drop my core temp back down. Makes me dehydrate quickly.
So my goal is to minimize how much my body wants to sweat. And keeping my core cool is apparently critical for that.
Who'd of thought. hehe.
So I had a plan for today's ride.
I got up early and drove across town to BikeLab. And had them put a new chain on. They tightened my beat up cassette for me. And gave me a price on its inevitable replacement.
Then instead of going home, I decided,
I really needed to go for a bike ride. I didn't care how hot it was. 95°F.
I was going for a ride.
So, I stopped by the gas station and had an icey slushy drink right before I started the ride. Instead of just iced water. And I put two frozen mixed drink packs in my backpack, laying against my back.
I do believe the frozen drinks, did in fact, help keep my core temp cool, the entire ride.
I noticed that I did not sweat profusely on this ride. I felt great. I was able to maintain power level longer. Manage my breathing better. And I had more stability and confidence on the trail and jumps. Despite also having to adjust my cornering due to increased speeds.
I will definitely be using ice packs in my backpack for training this summer. It made a massive difference.
