China is known for having some of the strongest beam work in the world, and they definitely reinforced it after their 2021 nationals competition. Many athletes had standout performances on balance beam, including Ou Yushan, whose podium training performance wowed competitors and fans alike; however, these five -- Li Shijia, Guan Chenchen, Zhang Jin, Sun Xinyi, and Lu Yufei -- managed to post huge D scores and E scores in competition. See how they received their difficulty scores (D scores) and execution scores (E scores) in this video!
The scoring at Chinese Nationals seemed to be more lenient this year than in other years, with numbers a bit higher than I expected on many routines. However, that doesn't detract from the high quality and fantastic execution seen in these balance beam performances. To compare with some scores (comparisons cannot be 100% equal because scoring at every competition is different):
- Li Shijia, Guan Chenchen: 15.400
- Sun Xinyi: 15.200
- Simone Biles @ 2019 Worlds: 15.066 (gold)
- Zhang Jin, Lu Yufei: 14.800
- Liu Tingting @ 2018 Worlds: 14.533 (gold)
Lu Yufei was definitely a standout from these championships, but I thought that Sun Xinyi was the big standout on balance beam. I was super impressed by her performance in qualification, and I hope that she can keep it up in future competitions!
The new Code of Points will definitely penalize many of these routines. In 2022-24, the Code of Points (CoP) will include the following changes:
- 0.2 bonus for D+ dismounts (will hurt gymnasts who compete double twist)
- Ring Leap and Ring Jump (D) count as the same element and can't be competed twice
- Candle Mount (D) has been downgraded to a C rated element
Many gymnasts from China currently compete these skills/types of skills as of now, and we will see them changing their style in the upcoming quad. To see more about the new code, check out this video: • 6 key changes in the *...
TIMESTAMPS:
0:00 Intro and disclaimer
0:16 Lu Yufei, 14.800 (14.766 EF)
1:50 Zhang Jin, 14.800 (14.900 QF)
3:23 Sun Xinyi, 15.200 (15.200 QF)
4:55 Li Shijia, 15.400 (15.400 QF)
6:37 Guan Chenchen, 15.400 (15.466 AA)
Guan Chenchen earned the highest score on balance beam that we've seen this year in any competition! Super impressive work.
It's super interesting to see what might happen with China's Olympic Team in women's gymnastics at Tokyo 2020/Tokyo 2021. These Olympics are coming up quite quickly, and predictions for the team are still way up in the air. Obviously, beam is important for China's team, but given how strong they are across the apparatus, I believe they'll be focusing on other apparatuses, including vault, uneven bars, and floor exercise.
I do not own this footage. Footage was found on KZitem channel HongKong Gymnastics, which has many more videos from these championships -- check them out to see other routines and competitors! These videos are all being used legally as they are educational by nature and therefore qualify under fair use.
