There are underground dubstep artists that have way more in common with Scorn's period of flexing in that style than the fratboy stuff you describe. Check out Gantz, Kode9, Silkie, DJG, Moldy, LAS and pretty much anything that has come out on Innamind. Amazing work on this!

this is great, man. being a huge fan of pretty much everything mick harris and jkb have ever put their hands on, i've gotten to know the scorn discography pretty well, and i think you did a fantastic job communicating how great of a band this is. your reactions to each individual album are pretty on par with my own, and it's very obvious how much you "get" this work. hope to see more of these retrospectives!

Thanks so much for the kind words! I'd love to do a JKB video, but there's so many projects to cover. Mick and JK Flesh have just done a split that I need to check out, with his Monrella project. There's supposedly new Scorn records coming this year too so this video is already out of date LOL Wish I could have put more Mick Harris stuff here but there's so much of it I still haven't heard from certain projects. There's so much music, yet so little time, eh? Cheers! :D

Everything that has stemmed, in one way or another, from Scorn, this crazy matrix, well, it's also a product of genius: all of John Zorn (including the hybridizations with the galaxy of Ipecac Recordings), Mick Harris, Bill Laswell... So, Scorn is indeed a miracle. It is the primal molecule of concentrated talent and influences.

I remember a short lived scene called Isolationist and there even an album made of various artists. They were basically dubstep before dubstep an Scorn is definitely part of that along with Kevin Martin's numerous acts.

Great video. The only thing I would say is the idea that Stealth is "what dubstep would become" is maybe a little off as 2007 was a good few years into the existence of dubstep at that point. However, he was still defintely ahead of things in the 90s and no doubt was an influence on some of the harder, more industrial dubstep people like Vex'd were putting out around 2005 or so. Also he's still great live as Scorn. A couple of mates booked him here in Bristol not so long ago and put him on a huge soundsystem for a live set. It was punishingly loud and he basically did the whole industrial dubstep thing but with a constant wall of insane delay feedback noise going the whole time. The guy also has the most insanely good memory too. Like, you could mention him playing in Bristol causally whilst talking to him and he'd be able to reel off the exact dates of every time he'd been here with Napalm Death and the like. Dude's got the besr anecdotes.

Hi Jamie thank you for the corrections and the stories. I didn’t know about the Bristol date! I have seen him live as Scorn before though, it was brutally loud 😅 - it was just before he “quit” doing Scorn around the time of the Yozza EP. Cheers!

@@LiquidreflectiveDigby was there and this is his recollection of it "Mick Harris was doing a promotional DJ set at a scruffy Nottingham late-night bar, I think it was called 'Bellamys' back then. The bar was tiny, holding maybe 30 people max, mostly made up of Earache staffers, a few local Scorn fans and a few non-music-type strangers who I assumed were the regular drinkers in the bar. Nik had come over from Birmingham to hang out, he was not performing that night so could indulge in as many beers and shots at the bar as he wanted. It was just a regular friendly booze up like many before it, and since. I do recall that Nik was deep in conversation with a stranger at the bar for a long time. Then seemingly for no apparent reason, Nik violently struck out at the guy, glassing him with his shot glass at close range and then fled the scene. No one else was involved and the victim was lucky not to be blinded in the attack. To this day I don't know what triggered him to do it, but it was totally out of character for him, something just snapped. Nik was arrested the next day back in Birmingham and was sentenced to prison for one year. The story is also mentioned at the AllMusic site."

Great video! Based on what your saying I think you'd appreciate a lot of earlier dubstep. A lot of it has similarly paranoid, desolate and hypnotic vibes. I'd already been into scorn for years when I discovered older dubstep artists like coki and loefah, and when I did it made scorn make so much more sense to me. Really sounds like they were taking a lot of influence from that scene but making it even darker, heavier and more experimental.

You haven’t listened to much genuine industrial music if you think the 90s “weren’t kind to it”. This was the golden age for Genocide Organ, Brighter Death Now, and their two labels Tesco Organisation and Cold Meat Industry. There were also many other small European labels producing lots of great industrial albums throughout this time. Enjoy discovering them.

Fair enough. Although the kind of pop metal you’re talking about is a complete irrelevance to the authentic industrial sound and spirit. So not even worthy of thought. Tesco Org are still going strong.

I was there that night in Bellamys Bar when Nic flipped-out and glassed someone. The victim was very lucky in that the tall glass that Nic used, hit him around the eye socket. An inch in any direction and he would have been blinded. I then watched as the place erupted and watched Digby doing a rugby tackle on Nic in the doorway which he wriggled out of and into the night.... Thankfully the victim was pretty laid back about it and Nic spent his time in prison, studying for a degree
