Scotland's First Railway was built between coal pits at Tranent and salt pans on the East Lothian Coast at Cockenzie in 1722. Originally built to a gauge of 3ft 3in it was entirely made of wood (including the waggons) and was rebuilt twice in 1728-30 and 1743-44, again in wood, but to 4ft gauge. It has the distinction of the first railway involved in a battle, being fought accross during the Battle of Prestonpans in September 1745. Rebuilt in iron in 1815, some of the line, albeit rebuilt to standard guage, was in use until the 1960s.
