I was born in Glasgow, immigrated to Canada at 10, been here almost 50 yrs. They took the boy out of Scotland but they could never take Scotland out of the boy! Excellent mix - what a treat, all my old favorites!! The Scots & the English were both fierce fighters with noble causes. "Those days are past now, and in the past they must remain" (Flower of Scotland). There are new enemies that require us to be brothers in arms as never before.

@insanezy I was merely pointing out that the image used is from a painting depicting United States Marines in the battle of Belleau Wood. The men of the 4th Marine Brigade were from every part of the world and certainly many were of Scots decent. It is a common error to mistake US troops in WWI helmets for British Commonwealth Forces. The US adopted the "Brodie" helmet in 1917 and used it into the early days of WWII.

@TheDarkesT44 No, it was earned during the battle of Balaclava where the Sutherland Highlanders, the 93rd regiment of foot, held off an attack by several thousand Russian cavalrymen. The tactic of 2 rank versus cavalry was unusual, but the 93rd's commander was a veteran of many years service and selected the formation. The regiment delivered 3 volley's and the Russian's retired; saving the British Army's baggage train.

The Scots have a long earned reputation as fierce warriors. The Romans knew it and later so did the Norwegians, the Danes and everyone else who came to conquer. My own family history traces its roots on my Father's side to the MacFarlanes, one of the Highland clans. I heard tell of great deeds and men bigger than life since I was knee high. I knew my Father to be a proud, brave man. It gives me a great sense of pride to think that I and my brothers came from such men. Alba gu Brath!

The decision to merge all the regiments into one was not what you term London (although The Defence Ministry who ratified the decision are in Westminster) but in fact the Army Board. In charge was C in C General Sir Mike Jackson and the man who actually caried it out was the Adjutant General, General Sir Alistair Irvine (not sure of correct spelling) who is ex-Black Watch. Their decision affected all regiments including English and Welsh. pipersplay

Scottish colonization of the Americas comprised a number of failed or abandoned Scottish settlements in North America, a colony at Darien, Panama, and a number of wholly or largely Scottish settlements made after the Acts of Union 1707, and those made by the enforced resettlement after the Battle of Culloden and the Highland Clearances. - Details taken from the Wiki page - search for "Scottish colonization of the Americas.

Aye, I agree that Scotland should be a seperate country... But sir Yocowman... the days that the movie "Braveheart" depicted are over, Scotland was free do to the deeds of hero's in the War's of Independence, every last Scot was indeed a hero that stood against English tyranny. Any time after that in history though it was no longer suppression, it was politics look up "The Act of the Union" to learn more. Alba gu brath!
