Scotland Yard Casebook - The Seddon Case
News of the Times Episode 331 | 1911
In today’s episode, it is 1911 North London. A wealthy spinster lodger has died in the Seddon household. She has been poorly for a few weeks. The doctor issues the death certificate and Eliza Barrow, the spinster, is buried in a cheap grave.
But, by chance, Eliza’s relatives have heard of her death and are baffled why they had not been contacted. Looking further into it, it would seem that despite Eliza’s wealth, she was buried both hurriedly and cheaply. And where has all her wealth gone?
An exhumation is ordered, and Scotland Yard is called in. This case dominated the papers for weeks. It had all the elements of a great story: a wealthy spinster, a charming man, Scotland Yard, famed defence lawyer Marshall Hall and the secretive Freemasons.
We take a look at the background, the crime, the trial and the postscript of the Scotland Yard Seddon case in today’s episode of Murderous Mondays.
Hosted by Robin Coles.
