I’m so glad you’ll be going into these controversial topics in the OT. I have a profound interest in the roots but it is intimidating when reading the OT as lay person. God Bless you Dr Hahn as you have been an instrument for God for many and including myself to re encounter the Agnus Dei.

This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you for leading me in the right direction Dr. Hahn and I am looking forward to studying more of your work on this topic. In my conversations with Muslims, I am constantly presented with Islamic arguments that Mohammad, in his offensive conquests carried out precisely the same type of 'holy war' which was commanded against the Canaanites. I'm also constantly being presented with sharia being not much different than the law commanded by God in the Old Testament. I'm looking forward to more material on this topic. May God bless you and continue to grace you with his Wisdom.

Scott this is very helpful. It is helpful to understand the conciliatory nature of the 2nd Law of Deuteronomy and the harem being part of this 2nd Law from Moses, a law Jesus described as incomplete because of the hardness of the Isrealite's hearts (Matt 19:8). Perhaps as harem shows up later in 1 Samuel and Joshua it is really a continuation of the tradition of this incomplete 2nd Law. What is beautiful about Christ is that instead of adjusting the Law because of the hardness of people's hearts as Moses did, Jesus kept to the whole Law and offered himself on the cross and the gift of grace from the cross. Obviously, Moses could not offer that gift and he is merely an important prefiguring of Christ. My question is: Is it possible that in 1 Samuel 15:2 that Samuel is making a direct reference to Exodus 17:8-10 and Deuteronomy 25:17-19 and that 1 Samuel 15:3 is actually a direction given by Samuel, not God, in this incomplete 2nd Law tradition? Is it possible that God himself never directly orders the killing of women and children and that all of this is conciliatory directives offered by Jewish leaders managing the hardness of the Israelites' hearts? Therefore the when God says to Samuel, "I regret having made Saul king for he has turned from me and not kept my command" (1 Samuel 15:11), is it possible that this somehow does not include the killing of women and children? Is it possible that God's great disappointment is in keeping the best animals alive and the king alive (potentially for a ransom or other gain) while killing the women and children? Finally, in battles like these, wasn't it common for women and children to flee the city and hide before battles (as these cities would not have been as fortified and safe in a full battle between armies) and that any family staying would have made themselves by choice combatants and outward opponents of God?

Your analogy is not really accurate. You’re not accounting for the fact that they killed their CHILDREN and kidnapped all the women afterwards to do only God knows what with them. This apologetic response is disgusting like a lawyer knowing his client is guilty of horrible crimes against humanity but still working his best to keep him free and convince everyone he’s innocent. This idea of having a divinely intended location for you to live is the same ideology that leads to the same violence in the Holy Land today. It’s disgusting. You’re also implying that anyone who was conceived in rape is worthless and tainted when really that child had no control over how they were created. I am an unbeliever. If we were around in 50 BC and God told you to kill me would you say that’s the right thing to do? All of your justifications can be torn apart.
