From Scott Ritter's talk at CCB. Watch the full video here: • Scott Ritter on U...
Former UN weapons inspector and US Marine intelligence officer Scott Ritter speaks at the Community Church of Boston, about the conflict in Ukraine, US-Russia relations, and his most recent book Disarmament in the Time of Perestroika: Arms Control and the End of the Soviet Union.
Scott also wrote SCORPION KING: America’s Suicidal Embrace of Nuclear Weapons from FDR to Trump.
Having served in the Soviet Union, Scott offers an alternative perspective to the war in Ukraine when compared to the mainstream, corporate media. Before the 2003 Iraq War, Scott gained prominence as a weapons inspector for correctly stating that Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction.
Scott Ritter’s most recent book, Disarmament in the Time of Perestroika: Arms Control and the End of the Soviet Union, “is the definitive history of the implementation of the INF Treaty signed by Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan in all its complexities.” The negotiations of the INF Treaty offer a blueprint for how world powers can peacefully negotiate complex situations.

Long story short, I was born in 1983 at Far East of Russia. I clearly remember 1991... it was nightmare up until 2000. I lost many relatives during those days, my Mom cried when she couldn't feed us cause she haven't been paid at her job... We have been doing whatever we could to survive even kids, I will never forget that experience and I will never wish to anyone to go through such situation. But I'm quite amazed deep level of understanding of what exactly happened and Russia's history from Scott. Huge respect for him and his clear vision, USA need people like him. Unfortunately Scott and others who have adequate point of view not in charge, but until guys like him exists in USA we all have chance to minimize damage which occurs right now. I only wish that people like Scott had more influence on society. God bless you people of USA, we ordinary people of Russia is not your enemy we just want to save our country and our families.

@Markus Klyver Yeah you can call it Russian perspective, but in the same time it's very close to reality. First law after the coup they dragged into Ukrainian parliament was was "language law" not economy issues not questions about joining EU , Russian language is the thing which holds whole country back on the road to happiness and prosperity, my my my ... Then shortly after Alexander Turchinov announced counter terror operation, which by the way the can not do according to Ukrainian law, and since then everything has went south. You can easily find videos about Ukrainian air force striking city of Lugansk, central square where were only civilians, few of them died unfortunately... And about Azov , Tornado, Right Sector , Aidar look man even Government in Kiev condemned some units and put them in jail because even for them it looked wild, they behaved like animals. As I said before this is not Russian perspective, this is perspective of reality.

Just wanted to say, while I understand that the video is from a Russian perspective, some of the points are (at least to my knowledge) inaccurate. For example, with the law about Russian minority languages, which was repealed, it was the addition made by Victor Yanukovych, that defined a minority language as a language spoken by 10% of the population and made the region officially bilingual. The Russian schools also stayed even after 2014. Finally during the Maidan revolution the nationalists made up a small part of the protesters. After the revolution they got around 1% on presidential elections and the great boogeyman, Azov, made up less than 5000 people out of a 300 000 strong Ukrainian army.

Thank you very much, Scott. Everything you told about what happened in 90's and how that looked form Russian perspective and what Russian people thought and felt about that - is 100% true. Everything you told about the difference between Russia in 90's and Russia now - is 100% true. Dear American audience, Scott Ritter knows exactly what he's talking about. Please listen to him.

@Markus Klyver By the way, there is also a video of Ukrainian nationalists surrounding people who came out with portraits of those who died in the war (the Immortal Regiment) to lay flowers at the Eternal Flame, nationalists chant their slogans, do not let them pass. If necessary, I can find and drop the link. In general, monuments to war heroes are being demolished, streets named after them are being transformed into Ukrainian nationalists. So in Kiev they renamed the streets of Bandera and Shukhevych. By the way, Biden presented an award from the Azov battalion. He came out with a bandage on his arm, and a Nazi tattoo under the bandage - this can be seen in other photos. And Zelensky in England gave a pilot's helmet, which was awarded to the hero of Ukraine - Vadim Voroshilov, and his call sign is "Karaya" in honor of the Nazi pilot Erich Alfred Hartmann (Luftwaffe), who shot down Soviet and American planes, for which he was awarded the highest order of Nazi Germany Knight's Cross with an Iron Cross with oak leaves, swords and diamonds. He is the idol of Vadim Voroshilov, there are also photos where his call sign is written on the helmet (but there is no one on the gift, either another one, or they still deleted it because it was too much)

@Marcello Genesi I completely agree...it feels hopeless a lot of the times. But if public educates themselves and speaks out, at least some events can be changed, even a little. Look at co vid. Two years ago and now, there's a big difference...so many people fought against the lies, but not enough people...we need to fight to get them on our side.

I was born in Russia in 1987 and moved to Lithuania in 1988 when it was part of the Soviet Union. I was a child in 1990s but I still remember how hard it was in Lithuania but in Russia it was even worse, I remember watching Russian news and there were protests all over the country because of delayed wages, some people did not get paid for more than a year, others were paid with the products of the enterprise and had to sell the products themselves in order to survive (enterprises did not had money to pay salaries, people worked for many months without receiving any salary). People did everything to survive, many criminals appeared, people even cut (stealed) power line cables to sell them for scrap. For others, it was a time of opportunity, they illegally privatized strategic enterprises while there was house and anarchy in the country, and became oligarchs. It was a really terrible time.

@Markus Klyver If you had any knowledge you'd know it's not only Azov. There are others like Aidar, Torpedo, Kraken, Donbass battalions, also Right Sector(which has, I mean had xD far more than 5000 people), Svoboda and others which WERE less militant before the special operation started. Even if those counted only 5 people, does the number justify their crimes? Ultra nationalism is on the rise in Ukraine since mid 90's. It is not only Russian minority that faced discrimination, but also Romanian and Hungarian in the western part of Ukraine, there are also other ethnic minorities that moved in Ukraine migrating from the Balkans, like Greeks, Bulgarians, Serbs. Just to get you familiar with demographics.

@Markus Klyver The point is not even in schools, but in relation to the Russian-speaking population. Moreover, the Russian language was marginalized. I will not quote the Ukrainian philologist Irina Farion, but she perfectly illustrates the essence of the problem. As for the army, as far as I understand, the use of troops against their own population and massacres in Odessa and Donbass is a crime, a civil war, regardless of how many nationalists there were among the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Just as in the story with the Austrian artist, the power bloc did its part and went into the shadows, becoming the right hand of the new government. The political field has been cleared, the new government has come out "in white." It seems to work for most people.

It breaks my heart that the US chose the path of taking advantage of Russia instead of being a true partner and friend. A lost opportunity for the whole world. I think making jokes are a lot less serious than making war. You also say that you respect every nation, but then you go and bash Anglo Saxons. My father was a hero of Soviet Union, spent five years fighting Germans 1941 -1945 and another four years fought Bandera in Ukraine till 1949. I am a Russian Jew, my grandparents and my wife relatives run from the pogroms from Ukraine. Bandera continues to be a divisive figure in Ukraine and US blindly support that. Unfortunately, Zelenskiy is a talented Jew and he is playing role scripted by our country very well. Scott, the facts your present are 100% accurate, both my family and I experience that - Thank you!

Thank you Scott for telling 10% of truth Ness. I grew up in the GDR and we had and have many friends in Russia. It was terrible to hear from them how they were doing. Nobody got money to pay their bills. Highly educated people had to get side jobs paid in kind and that was the only reason they could survive. And we couldn't help them.... Because we were also on a bad way, as our country was also exploited by the takeover of FRG. There was only one difference, because in order to be able to defend the victory of the West over the East, the people in the former GDR were of course not allowed to go under completely. Beside, they were afraid that otherwise there would be a "new" revolution, but this time not a peaceful one.

@TooMuchSauce I don't make comparisons on the basis of presumed holiness, and I don't pretend to be anyone I'm not. What people did I judge? Russians? Americans? Whom? (Romans 3:23) 'For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.' That includes me, of course. So there is no special value, virtue, or merit which sets one people apart, nor any iniquity which is unique to a particular group. Not to deny that certain cultures recommend or condone certain kinds of behavior. Elitism? Really? As a laborer you probably earn more than I do, and deservedly so. I just scrape by. Perhaps you should be the one looking down. Anyway, I can see that you're tryin to be constructive and helpful with your comment, so thank you.

@marcus onesimus what? I’m not sure who you’re directing this to, but you render almost all value to your “holier than thou” rhetoric, when you start off with a judgemental assessment of an entire people. “Typical imperialist thinking”? Lol like really, I’m just a simple laborer. Let me ask you: what have you done to help NATO’s eastward expansion? Next time, leave the whole “typical” elitist jargon because its not doing you any favors, but I think you’re on the right track and would most likely agree with you otherwise

Apparently you don't care about the independence or freedom of East European nations which Russia has repeatedly invaded and suppressed since 1795. Typical imperialist thinking. Only big nations and blocs of nations. On that subject, the eastward expansion of NATO was welcomed by these countries. The problem with Russia is that it respects only its own borders. This very much reminds me of American behavior outside the European theatre. Big nations are no 'saviors'. (Psalm 146:3) ;Do not trust in princes, in mortal man, in whom there is no salvation.' So you are right in the sense that no gov't can confer spiritual life or spiritual freedom. That is a gift which only Christ can give.
