One of his best songs from the ‘67 - ‘70 period. A kitchen sink drama set to song. Epic internal lives within ordinary people living day to day. Nobody has done that kind of songwriting better than him. Love his music both from then and now.

I too thought it was enchanting way....so now I have to review the whole song. This is on my top five list of Scott songs. With the passage of time his own compositions are the ones I turn to repeatedly! Always coming back to you was the flip side of Joanna and I have to say even back then I played it more than the hit that was Joanna. I think I must have been quite a nice 14 year old struggling to understand some quite adult stuff. I am so glad it was Scott who grew me up! Dylan too!!

With Scott, there is really no debate as to his lyrics (in words as opposed to meaning) as, I have heard no-one (no exaggeration) who's singing diction is as perfect as his. Tis a small piece of genius and I give you my thanks that this exists on youtube. Feel proud.

@DrusillaDarko Thank you, I wouldn't have said it better myself. It seems that "enchanting way" appears in the song's lyrics if you search for it on the Internet, which is never a foolproof way to get any song's lyrics right, as everyone should know by now. ;) It also appears in the "Boy Child" booklet, which shows several incorrections in the lyrics of other songs as well.

Wonderful phrasing! Why the discordant backing part around 2.30?
@TheOllyred64
6 жыл бұрын
My take on that, is that it's deliberate. Humphrey Plugg purports to have a perfect life, but there's a malevolent undertone to his character and a bit of a double life going on.The discordant blare (which happens twice) is a musical warning to us, that all is not quite as you think. Scott is definitely clever enough to do that in a song. It works for me.
@blairmulholland
5 жыл бұрын
It's an odd song in that it seem to switch narrators after a few verses. Starts off with "Mrs Plugg" talking about her day, then switches to what "Mr Plugg" has been up to while he's out?
@genericgorilla
2 жыл бұрын
no, it's a dialogue between "Mr Plugg" and an anonymous girl, implied to be a prostitute who Mr Plugg frequents, since he's a john that visits girls to rid himself of the dreadful tedium of everyday life.

Surely it is 'Channing Way' as opposed to 'enchanting way' - otherwise, not only is Scott's impeccable singing diction severely flawed (repeatedly) but he is also grammatically incorrect several times. I'd be interested as to why anyone insists it is 'enchanting way' but I'm fairly certain it's 'Channing Way' and the video poster is correct. Still, either way, it is magnificent as always to hear.
