If ever there were videos making me feel 'yup, I could never have done that!' Your videos are them. But it nice to see the process like this since I've never had the experience. Amazing climb 👍🏻👍🏻

Do you have any recommendations for locations where a beginner can go to work on the basics of ice climbing without getting too technical(not a ice climbing gym, but actual outdoor locations you think would be good for a beginner)? I would really appreciate any locations as I am new to ice climbing in Scotland and don't have much experience with where to go.

I'd say Coire an t'Sneachda in the Cairngorms. It's like the Stanage Edge of winter climbing. Short, easy & generally safe approach & descents. Quite a few Grade Is & an assortment of Grade IIs to get you going. Won't need many ice screws, if any. Cairngorm granite often takes nuts at the side of the gullies, take a set of asymmetric nuts like DMM offsets as they really help wih flared cracks.

Little tip when you are removing screws, Bang them off something (I usually use my head) so that the ice comes out. If you don't the ice can freeze on the inside and you wont be able to place it again.

Sure I can be seen at the start of the video hitting the screws off the ice a few times before popping them on my harness. A few seasons ago I swapped onto lead at the belay and took the rack off my partner, headed up the pitch couldn’t get a single screw in because they were frozen full😂 wasn’t a happy bunny. By the last few screws on this route not one fk could be given as it was that cold and knew they weren’t getting placed again as I was getting to fk off the hill😂

Awesome video, looks really fun (but cold!). Went hiking with you years ago (Beinn a'Chaorainn and Beinn Tealach in Winter) and you've done some amount of climbing since! Must be nearly done with the Munros now? Nice work!

@@liam_campbelll I'm good man, nearly done with the Munros - just the Cuillins, Fisherfields and some Torridon ones left. Hoping to finish this year. I deleted my personal Instagram unfortunately (long story!).

Just got some bandits and waiting to get out and use them next month on the Ben as staying in the CIC hut for four days. What’s your verdict on them compared to petzl quarks etc ?

I’ve been using the Bandits for 4 years man and can’t complain really. Feel the picks are a bit soft though.
