Being a recently retired person, I completely understand Scotty's feeling that he's no longer needed. When the younger crew members didn't have time to listen to his stories from the "good ol' days", and his expertise was considered not only out-dated, but even annoying and "in the way", I was able to identify with what he was going through. Star Trek always finds a way to address social issues in ways that really connect.

Regarding "Tapestry," it wasn't because of "this one instance in the bar" that changed the trajectory of Picard's life. The episode was about Picard wishing he had been a different person in his academy days, with the fight in the bar being but one instance. He didn't end up in the blue jumpsuit due to the missing bar fight. He ended up there because he was a completely different person, informed by his adulthood, instead of his youth.

37:31 the messages of this episode helped me to help a former best friend. He’d been going through a rough bout of depression, had been looking back at all the ills of his life and commented he’d wished his mother hadn’t been such a screw up setting him down the path his life took (she was well and truly an unfit parent, and was both psychologically abusive and exposed him to substances that were illegal) After he made that comment, I convinced him to sit down and watch the episode, SPECIFICALLY for that line from Picard to Riker at the end about the thread pull unravelling the tapestry of his life. After the episode, he was on the verge of tears, it pierced through all the mental fog and hit directly on the head of the nail of the quandary going through his mind. It helped him make some semblance of peace with those negative aspects of his past and to recognise that him being the person he became was in SPITE of those things from his mother, not BECAUSE of them. As such, this already great episode took on a much greater sense to me.

One small plot hole at the end of "Relics": It's well established in _Star Trek_ canon that transporters generally don't work through shields, and yet, here they beam the two people out of the _Jenolan_ while its shields are still in operation. I think it could easily have been fixed by having them drop the shields at the last second. It would mean the hatch closes a few seconds sooner. A Dyson sphere is almost incomprehensibly large, and it is hard to portray visually. It has so much land area that there could be a thousand advanced civilizations comprising billions of people at various places on its interior who have learned to thrive in spite of the solar instabilities. Not for me. Its entirely different. The reason that the "Relics" scene resonated with me was the fact that all his old comrades are missing and that its not only the ship itself he remembers, but also the glorious past with the TOS crew. On the other hand, whe had the WHOLE TNG crew back with noone missing, and they just walked on a expensive piece of fan service with no real meaning behind it. I mean, the very episode of "Relics" shows that Picard only ever missed the Stargazer. His fondness of the Ent-D itself was to me forced and constructed. The only one who acted acording to his character was Worf (who prefers the Ent-E...), any maybe LaForge...

The reason TNG, DS9, and VOY don't live under the shadow of TOS is that they forged their own path, with episodes like Relics being outliers. Picard season 3 on the other hand, although being the best season of that show and indeed being a good 10 episodes of TV lives under the shadow of TNG because it's so beholden to it. When it comes to nostalgia Lower Decks is the show that really gets it right because it approaches it with affection but also a healthy disrespect because Mike Mcmahan understands that a lot of it is really silly and therefore we're allowed to take the piss out of the thing we love ... The original bridge scene in "Relics" is particularly noteworthy in terms of the continuity of the "Star Trek look". Up until this episode in the 6th season, it was always speculative among the fandom whether the TOS era would be recalled by TNG with all of its 1960s design & aesthetics intact, or would they ret-con and update everything( the way Star Trek Discovery has). Since the several movies from the 70s & 80s retconned the Klingons, and never showed any glimpses of the TOS-era uniforms, ship designs, etc., it was a pleasant surprise to see the original bridge brought back.

Tapestry has always been a favorite of mine, for all the reasons you mentioned. It really got me thinking about my life in a while different way, which should be the entire point of sci-fi. My parents, my family, my teachers, my friends ... all had a much greater influence on me than any movies/shows/music. However, this is one episode that I can say actually did have an impact on my outlook on life. The idea that even our mistakes can help shape us into the people we want to be, and being terrified of ever making any mistakes can rob us of critical moments of personal growth, is something I've carried with me through life. Relics is a great episode, but it has only one flaw. They never mention to Scotty that Spock is still alive. It also has long-term problems. In short, an artefact of that size would become a huge diplomatic challenge and more considering DS9 and what happened with the Romulans later. Everyone would be interested in that, but has become one of the many forgotten artefacts. As for Tapestries, the problem with omnipotence is that it is hard to grasp. For the creator of stories that have it in them and for those that enjoy those stories. Q has no need to play tricks, he can do this. He can arrange a timeline where other people play Picard's role so nothing is changed.

The Dyson Sphere Theory is a very interesting one. I have read some of the research on it and it's, to quote a great man "fascinating." Charles Pellegrino wrote on this, as he did about the life growing on the Titanic. The theory is just that only a theory but it makes for some interesting reading.

Oh, Relics. The big plot hole episode. This was shot a few years before Generations and the Trek writers are notorious for forgetting major things like .. oh yea.. Maybe Scotty shouldn't be in the Kirk "dies" scene on the Enterprise-B since fans saw him asking about Captain Kirk rescuing him on the TV show.

Great reaction, Ollie. Love your takes and your terrible dad jokes. LOL. To answer your question about Picard's changed history....my assumption was always that Q changed everything back to the original timeline. You're right that on camera, we only see Picard get stabbed, which came after his affair with his buddy, but i think from a storytelling point-of-view, they only showed the stabbing scene as a quick representation of Picard reverting to the man he was. The whole "second chance" has been a storytelling device for thousands of years, and the way they always go is everything gets reverted back to normal.

8:50 Rebuilding the set would have been prohibitively expensive. The captain's chair and the helm console had been built for use at conventions and the like, and were rented and placed on a small 'wedge' of recreated set, which - with careful camera work and blue screening some old footage - turned out pretty well, and within the budget.

There's a novelization for Relics that has a bit more with Scotty and Franklin on the Genolan and so you kinda feel Franklin's loss a bit more. In that novelization and probably shot were scenes with him talking to Counselor Troi. It's a easy read so if you liked the episode, you may want to seek it out.

Picard and Marta didn't originally sleep together, no. That was something Picard regretted and decided to change, but found that it damaged their friendship and so maybe it wasn't such a bad thing that they never took things to the next level, after all. As for whether that part stayed changed at the end of the episode or whether Q just let Picard redo the fight, your guess is as good as mine.

@@RolyPolyOllieReactions And so did Scotty, apparently. At least, on first coming out of transporter. Real reason being Generations had not been written yet, of course. In assorted spin off novels, meantime, Scotty soon gave up retirement and went back to become a key member of the Starfleet engineering corps, even helping to build the Enterprise-E... As for Tapestry, the past events occur about 40 years prior, though I think they may have mistakenly said '30' ? Oh, and Dyson Spheres got revisited in the Star Trek: Online video game, too.
