In 1997 these two O class submarines were rotting in Harry pounds Scrapyard. He kindly let us look around them. The Subs and the scrapyard are now long gone.
Well, they weren't both scrapped. I served on HMS Otus and that boat was rescued intact from the Pounds scrapyard and towed to Sassnitz in Germany where it was put back into a condition that it could be used as a tourist attraction. It is there today. I wish I could go and have a look but it's a bit too late in my time. There are some visitor videos on youtube. Type in HMS Otus and have a look.

Living in Portsmouth when I was younger coming in and out of Portsmouth on the M275 I used to see these subs all the time, was such a shame to see these go. Surprising to see they were still (from the outside views at least seeing no hull breaches below the waterline) remarkably sound structurally speaking. I do believe at least one of them was sold abroad for historical purposes

These were diesel/electric subs. When submerged they ran completely on battery power with electric motors, very few moving parts, very quiet. They ran the diesel engines when on the surface to recharge the batteries. They could also run the diesels when submerged, but only at "snorkel" depth. The snorkel stuck up to the surface to suck in fresh air and vent the exhaust. These subs were vulnerable when running their diesels, but deadly silent when on batteries.

Even in America we doing the same thing, cutting up history. The last of the Guppy 3 conversion boats, USS Clamagore, SS343 is in Patriots point museum and they are out of money to repair and upkeep the old girl. So their option, scrap her or sink her for a reef. It is a shame that these boats that fought not only WW2 but the cold war and are last of their kind, receive such treatment.

Harry Pounds scrapyard was full of stuff- old tanks, trucks and even a Bagnall steam engine- a dockyard shunter. I never went inside the yard but some of my classmates did. Once that motor way was built, the scrapyard which was once "in the middle of nowhere" and tucked away, was on full view to those coming into Portsmouth and the city bigwigs did not like it. There were other naval vessels there- smaller warships which may have been corvettes or frigates and a very old American submarine which I seem to recall had a chunk blown out of it to demonstrate some new explosive on the BBC Tomorrow's World programme. I think that engine was a Bagnall because one day, one of the older boys at my school turned up with the brass builder's plate- he had stolen it.

I must be the exception on a Mopar. 97 Ram with LA 318 has over 450K with original starter and front U-joint. Will go a ton any time I want it to. Went on hook twice with failed fuel pump and drove it to shop with a broken valve spring. All they did was change spring and button it back up. Foreign cars are built here so they don't bear costs shipping them by sea. Last time one of those loaded ships went down with all those cars on board, the captain committed suicide.

The scrapyard is still there just about, apparently the redevelopment was postponed or cancelled perhaps due to the economic climate. There's been some new additions in the past year or so such as some tug boats two of which were formerly operating on the river itchen, a fishing trawler and RNAL 50. Some stuff has been broken up and some remains. At one point there was a tug cut in half so you could see the cross section, quite interesting! I don't think it will ever recover to the scale on which it used to operate but It looks like they are keeping their hand in for now at least. Perhaps just waiting for the redevelopment to restart?

At least one of this class of sub survived. It's a permanent exhibit at the Fremantle Maritime Museum in Perth, Western Australia. The Royal Australian Navy donated it to the museum. It seems that of late, whenever the Royal Australian Navy decommissions a ship, they turn it into a dive wreck. Submarines would of course be an unsafe option as a dive wreck, shich is why this one was spared. There are two tours a day on board
