I have used an embroidery hoop for the frame. Super easy; just make sure to glue it in place so it doesn't shift. An old credit card works great for a squeegy. I also didn't do the whole light-sensitive thing, I just traced my pattern on the screen and painted around it with several layers of mod podge - the super low-budget method. It worked fine for my purposes and the screen is still useable after a half dozen uses.

Genius! I couldn’t find fabric ink, so I tried mixing acrylic paint with some fabric softener. It makes sure the paint isn’t too hard and it is much cheaper than the other alternatives I found. Also, to make sure your ink is heat set properly, lick your finger and lightly tap the shirt.

First off, I did NOT think of using a curtain fabric as a mesh for the screens, so that alone can literally save people HUNDREDS in dollars for screen printing materials. This video is incredibly helpful and makes the method so much more viable for anyone on a budget or wants to make graphic tees as a hobby. Second, this was a great tutorial overall, despite being your first time. You went through all the steps fairly well and easily to understand. Great job on the video.

M. Wolf the quality of the print itself and whether it cracks or not is solely up to the quality ink/paint you use.
@yeetoban

M. Wolf using cheap ink or paint obviously, but you can be cheap with sheets and that’s definitely the biggest cost in screen printing. Using curtain fabric is a fantastic alternative and won’t degrade quality. Depending only on the how detailed your design is, but that’s very specific on what you want. Like, if you want a full coloured photo. Going cheap for a hobby is completely fine and can still output high quality. You just have to know what not to skimp out on.

after you mixed the emulsion its best to let it sit in the dark with the lid loose for about 3 hours so all the bubbles rise to the top and dissipate. the air bubbles are most likely what caused all the pin holes in your emulsion

I took printmaking for three years for my BFA and I did quite a bit of serigraphy. When you apply the emulsion onto the screen, you want to make the most even layer of glob right at the top, and use the biggest squeegee you can to create a really consistent and thick layer of emulsion. The key is consistency because it will dry evenly. But I really like this video, and I thought I wouldnt be able to use light emulsion chemicals to make screen prints, so this was super helpful!

Hello Mari.! My name's Duncan.! I just came across your video.! It's educational! Thank you! I also have interest in the hobby of screen printing and iron-on printing.! I'm trying to learn more about this creative process from these videos across KZitem!. It's awesome to have our fellow kiwis explaining the process and international people of course.! It looks like it can be simple/easy/challenging to say the least. I hope to follow your video and Charli Marie's one too.! Low cost DIY type style screen print tasks. My hope and prayer is I can get better in time with these tasks. I find I struggle with them. Iron-on style and screen print although never tried screen printing yet. I've tried iron-on printing and the couple times I've tried my hand, I failed sadly. The image got all shredded/torn looking/faded. I guess you can only try, try again. As I've had to learn the hard way. If at first you don't succeed. Try, try again as the saying goes. I think there's a inspirational quote from a famous iconic sporting athlete. I'll quote him. It was Michael Jordan to be exact and I quote. " I failed many times in order to finally gain my success". The motto is 'never give up'. 'Never say never' quoted from Justin Bieber. Even there's an interesting answer in the word impossible. If you look closely it says and I quote. 'im possible'. Also the word Fail if you break it up it stands for, 'First Attempt In Learning'. As far as designs are concerned, my favorite types I'd want to utilize with apparel/clothing are animal designs, landmark designs, famous people, biblical scriptures, inspirational quotes, motivational quotes, love quotes. Amongst others. I could go on. There are options out there. Varieties.

The best part about the video is being along with you as you learn the process. My greatest need in learning screen printing is figuring out the emulsion part. I really loved the idea of taking apart the stretched canvas... I almost got a deal on them, but ended up saving my money for another time because the clock changed to another day and the sale went away. :-( Oh well, I have been trying the picture frames, and will look for some more. Glad I happened on your DIY. Now, on to a few more looking for helpful hints. :-)
