Thanks for the review. I just purchased the VR1 to use primarily on vocals as I figured it would reduce my sibilance and yes it does. In 50 years of recording with lots of mics this is the first one that I have found that sounds like it's supposed to and would recommend it to everyone.

The French horn sounded a lot like a Flugelhorn. I like this mic.

Hello, thank you for sharing this information in this video! I’m a little confused by what you said right before the recording examples...did you record the examples you show for the trumpet and horn on the VR1 or VR2? I’m just clarifying because it sounded like you started to talk about the VR2 and then explained that the recording examples were recorded on that mic. Anyway, thanks for the examples!

Recorded on VR1. Just letting people know there is a gain difference between the non active and active version (VR2).

Thanks for the video. What did you use to record the upright bass?

Would phantom power on a Tascam Model 24 mixer hurt this microphone or should I go with the VR2 which requires phantom power?
@purewaveaudio

I personally would not risk it and go with the VR2.

@@purewaveaudio Okay are phantom power blockers worth buying in case I want to use mics that don't need it? The tascam model 24 is all or nothing on phantom power and I also have condensers that require phantom power.

@@coffinperson In general, phantom power is suppose to be "phantom" and not seen by non powered mics. However, ribbons are more susceptible. This might be only older designs. Not sure, but I would not by a blocker for anything else except a regular ribbon or tube mic since it has its own power supply.

@@purewaveaudio On the VR1, it says "The VR1 is a passive ribbon, so it does not require phantom power. However, it is "phantom-protected", so it will not be damaged by accidental application of phantom power." This sounds like it is meant to protect it in case it is exposed to phantom power, but I don't think it means to go ahead and use it with phantom power on all the time, so I was thinking if I ever want to use a mic like that, I could just get a phantom power blocker for like 45 dollars on ebay.

I just got this. I notice the gain has to be much higher on my Scarlett than with the other Condenser I was using. Is that normal?

Yes, ribbon mics are the quietest of the bunch. If you get one that is phantom powered like the VR2, it would have an extra 10-15db of gain. You can always use a cloud lifter if needed. www.purewaveaudio.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=+cloudlifter

@@purewaveaudio thanks for the reply. Are ribbon mics only for close up recordings then? Could you use it as a room mic or would it be too soft?
@purewaveaudio

@@orzanoap Just depends on the source. Drums and elec guitar is not an issue. Others, will depend on the amount of clean gain you have available on the preamp.

@@purewaveaudio I have a Scarlett I am running the mic through. I put the phantom power on and now I read I may have damaged it? These mics don’t need any power?

@@orzanoap VR1 is a passive mic that does not use phantom power. You avoid phantom power with ribbon mics unless it is built for it. If the mic is passing signal you should be fine. If it was broken you would know it.

purewaveaudio That sounds a lot like a trombone rather than a French horn. Some very characteristic trombone playing, especially the glissando is what I’m hearing.
