That's what you come to learn about stuff like folk music, its proper interesting because there is no quote on quote "original version" these folk songs would be sung by ordinary people and passed down through generations, all with tweaks being made here and there to have the multiple versions we have in the modern day. Folk music back then was all about unity and it shows

Fun bit of history: his amputated leg was buried and given a state funeral. As he fell in and out of popularity, it was disinterred and re-interred with... befitting levels of pageantry, according to the mood of the people doing the digging. I was starting to type the story my Texas History teacher told me in seventh grade, that his prosthetic was stolen by Texas troops during the Texas war for independence - but, lo! Some quick research tells me it was not until later that he lost his leg. The prosthetic was stolen during the Mexican-American war, by troops from Illinois. It resides there, and periodically today different groups in Texas try to claim it should reside in my home state. Which, is awfully true to character for us, I suppose.

What are your thoughts on period pronunciation? I've encountered a few rhymes which no longer work, such as "found" and "wound" in Jackaroe.
@SeanDagher
3 жыл бұрын
I think it's really cool that those kinds of non-rhymes exist. I find them all over Dowland and Shakespeare as well. I don't usually sing them in the old pronunciation unless I'm doing a really deliberately historical performance, and even then, one has to take into account how much the audience is going to understand. In folk music we have the luxury of being allowed to change the words to make them rhyme again if we want to. Sometimes the almost rhyme is so unsatisfying that I have to do something to fix it. What do you usually do in those situations?
@hostoftheseawitch3431
3 жыл бұрын
@@SeanDagher That's really interesting, and thank you for the reply! I come from a reenactment background, so I'm always in a position to be deliberately historical. I can see what you mean though, as it runs the possibility of making the language less accessible to a segment of listeners. But, the word choice often does the same with regards to nautical terminology and period expressions. I think it's an interesting way to get into the minds of the original composers.

@@SeanDagher totally looking forward to it! the first version i heard was the longest johns' version of general taylor, and i loved it, and i went through every version on youtube music and added about half of them to my library. by far my favorite

Great shanty as always. If love to know now about which style working beats each shanty was aiming to motivate. I've occasionally whistled a shanty to myself when I've been doing chores, but sometimes the beat isn't the right rhythm for what i was doing

Well, they tend to work better slow, but you have to see how each job is going and adjust the speed of the song accordingly. It'll be different every time.
