@@SeanDagher Cool. The line I'm most familiar with sounds something like "aweigh-hey-a Stormy", which I think was a nickname for Taylor, maybe? Either way, thank you as always!

@@Erics_KZitem_Handle Stormy seems to be Stormalong being conflated with Taylor. Another variation used in Great Big Sea's version (learnt from Fergus O'Byrne of Ryan's Fancy), sounds like "Tell me where (are)ya, Stormy?". It must've been fifty years between the song's origin and it being collected in Somerset by Cecil Sharp; presumably plenty of time for the folk process to do its thing and produce the story mixing Taylor with elements of the Stormalong tale.

Taylor's president being forgotten is actually kind of suprising. A strong personality, he was a slave owner but also increasingly willing to curb it's spread later in life, many pinned their hopes of preserving the Union on him when he was elected. He pushed for a compromise in 1850, and his death is often seen as the end of any real hope of compromise on the slavery issue, making secession and civil war inevitable. I've always seen him as one of the more melancholic what ifs, if he had lived another 6 years, could the civil war have been put off for another generation? And would this have allowed a peaceful resolution (slavery seemed to be beginning to die out) or would it make things worse? (new slave states in the south west, and new weapons making for more carnage)
