I love the fact that this song incorporates some bits from sailing directions for the English Channel (“45 fathom and a white sandy bottom” and the list of landmarks from Dodman/Deadman to South Foreland). Btw Seán - pilot songs might be another interesting project! Loved it as always.

A precise distance is 33.6 or 33.8 leagues, depending on British or American “metric“ system, or 100.8-101.4 nautical miles accordingly. As some versions put a different measure. So it's fair to say 34, indeed. :)

This has become on of my new favorite videos! I love the Irish bar background and it was great learning all of the information through the maps and such, since those parts of the song were unclear to me before. The singing and chorus were also awesome too!

This song made its way to Australia where it became a drovers' "shanty" called Brisbane Ladies. The refrain goes thus: "We'll rant and we'll roar like true Queensland drovers We'll rant and we'll roar as onwards we push Until we return to the Augethella Station Cos it's flamin dry going through the old Queensland bush."

@@tg9527 I live in Queensland. Augathella is a small historic town of about 400 inhabitants in the middle of nowhere some 750km north west of Brisbane. Grazing is still the main industry but I don't think any of the cattle stations were actually called Augathella Station. Let us know how you go.

Yeah, that is a neat side-effect of wanting to have different melodies for verses and chorus. I actually changed the harmonic transition while recording the backing vocals to make it smoother going into the minor.

Which other melody? You could sing it reversed: minor for the chorus and major for the verse, or both major, or both minor.

Why is it about “Spanish ladies“ when it describes a trip from the north of France back to England? Is it possible that it was originally “French ladies“ but got changed due to British distaste for the French?
