Thank you for addressing how the other version of this shanty we're familiar with is not rhythmic. It is hauntingly beautiful and sentimental, but I always wondered how this song survived as a shanty because it wasn't sung as a work song. Hearing it as a work song is amazing! Really like what you did with it.

For those who may wonder what a shore song is, here is a lengthy explanation. A shore song is a shanty that no longer has use as a work songs. Examples of this are stamp and go shanties, such as drunken sailor. In some cases they are similar to forecastle shanties (such as Spanish Ladies), which dont follow a rythm a crew may use to work since their structure is more of that of traditional songs, a long verse sang by the shanty man followed by a long chorus sang by the whole crew. The Wellerman is another example of a Shore Song, just in case you were wondering. Shore songs also may have a structure similar to that of a work song, such as Nills Brown's rendition of Lowlands Away, however, the rythm they follow is not practical to execute any work, the rythm may be too slow or too inconsistent at parts, speeding up and slowing down from verse to verse, for a crew to do any coordinated labor Note that I am no professional in the field of shanties. Hope this helps lads!

I like the idea of revisiting other songs with different tunes/lyrics. In my opinion one of the best parts of shanties is that there can be many different versions of one song. It's very peculiar and unique. Great video today as, always

Black flag spoilers: I love this shanty, it means to me so much. I always associate Edwards last words with this shanty. Part of this song is required to unlock a secret room in ac syndicate that leads you to all Edwards belongings. It was Edwards favourite shanty, most likely because of Caroline. It's very sad and that's why I'm emotionally attached to it. Thank you for the amazing work Sean

Your rendition of this is awesome, and I’ve never heard it with this sort of tempo or rhythm 🍻 Like you said, Nils sings it much more slowly and somberly, but there’s just something about it that still makes me sad regardless.

What is a 'shore song'? Is that a shanty sung in a more melodic way, like the other version of lowlands away?

Probably, or sea songs that changed more. Most likely probably work chanteys changed into actual songs.
