I got one of these for my birthday last year and it's been brilliant, without anything to compare it to. I comfortably survived a few sub-zero nights around Cheddar and Snowdonia last year. Along with a 3 season Vango bag. Forward thinking is to pair it with my down quilt, which can be a bit chilly even when it's not cold. All the best with yours. I'm sure it'll serve you well, Trev.

Love mine - take it all the time now. I have switched to a thinner, lighter sleeping bag with the thermolite together they weigh not much more than my old bag on its own. but on really hot nights I can use just the thermolite on its own, intermediate temps just the bag on its own or both together if its a bit more chilly. As you say, you can add a lightweight bivvy bag to make it much warmer still.

Seems similar to the snugpak TS1 liner and is brilliant and very light and British made. The Ts1 is great at wicking away moisture if you do get a bit too warm and its warm. If you fold the liner first and then roll to put back in the bag its so much easier

I have both the reactor and the extreme, I just use them and a bivy bag most of the time. First time I used the extreme I just used my sleeping bag as a quilt and it was too warm. It was in a swag I must admit out bush with work. I can vouch for them as a good light weight option for increasing comfort on cold nights as we had ice on the swags in the morning so it did get cold overnight. Great piece of kit.

I have that liner (maybe the Extreme one); glad I had it when I needed it (I really needed it), but moving forward (better bag and better mat) I won't be using it. I find liners a bit cumbersome, it tangles up when you're inside. Having said that, a summer bag and this liner add up to less bulk (in the pack) than my 3 season bag, so as a combo for warmer nights and lighter hikes it does work out.
@SummitOrNothing
4 жыл бұрын
Yea, I was looking for a smaller option than my winter pack which tends to take up a third of my pack, combining my summer bag, a liner and my bivvy seemed to do the trick last winter. Hopefully this liner is better still than the one I was using! Cheers for watching!

Debating on the extreme vs the compact plus, which is one grade lower. Lighter and not as long. The extreme is 6ft 11", while the plus is 6ft. Even though I do want the extreme, it seems as though it'll be very long and annoying. I'm 5'9, and my bag, isn't that much bigger than me. So it seems the extreme might be a lot of extra fabric at the end. Don't you think

I have no experience of this kind of thing, way out of my price range pal, but I do okay. I wrestle with something in the night so would end up wrapped in like a coil of snake coils. £10 sounds okay £40 way over my price range, but i use an old YHA inner (not the one I had since being 12) and through it in washing when i get home. That goes in my mummy bag when I'm in the hammock.

Sadly Trev, in my experience, these are pretty crap. I bought the Extreme version - 60 quid! - for much the same reasons as you. In the heatwave this summer I bivvy camped on a very modest local hill, lowest night temperature 14 degrees, using a Snugpak Jungle Bag, rated as comfort 7 degrees. This is also pretty crap, but, knowing Snugpak as I do, I realised you can add 10 degrees to that in real terms, and expect the bag to be shite under 17. So I used the Sea to Summit as well, which is supposed to add at least 10 degrees, or 'a season'. I also had on full merino long johns/long sleeved top, AND an Alpkit wool jumper. I still was awake much of the night with the cold. Total rubbish. Yeah it was light in the pack and took up little room. But I was still cold! I'm starting to realise that you can't get performance from sleeping bags without weight and bulk - even when you do spend silly money. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is, sadly. Be interested to hear how you get on. Don't use it from the start of a kip, but call on it when you're chilly in the night - see if it works... cheers. Rich.

keith mclaren I always hear that as an excuse for cold bags - ‘strip off underneath or you stop them doing their job’. I don’t get the science of this approach at all. We’ve been told for many years now that layering is everything. We don’t wear a down jacket against bare skin after all, that would be daft - no, we have appropriate layers between. I think this is just a get out clause to blame the user for bags which are nowhere near as warm as advertised. Sorry!
@keithmclaren1972

@@CottonBud my bags not cold the science is the base layer u r wearing traps and slows down heat release which should be going into the down it wont work well thats all im saying its counter intuitive to strip down to be warmer,im quite a cold sleeper myself happy camping

Bloody hell Rich! Wrapped up like that and you still felt the cold? Lol. I'll see how it goes. I did try sleeping in it alone during my first camp out on Dartmoor this season,that was cold but by the time I got back in my down bag as well it did me fine. And I know when we stayed on Cadair Idris at the very start of spring a few years back, Nath was so toasty in his he opened the door of the tent through the night to let some cold in, much to my annoyance because I was f***in freezing lol. I'll see how I find it during the winter,bit it already feels like an improvement to my pollycotton one,tbh. Cheers for commenting

To be honest, the jungle bag is £45, and square, you are not going to get much performance from a 45 quid square sleeping bag. In addition a lot of heat is lost to the ground through your sleeping mat as that is where your bag will be squashed the most, so invest in a good one with an R value of over 5 and/or a thermal break. It can make a big difference. Also a lot depends on how cold a sleeper you are. You dont need weight and bulk, but you do need to invest in quality, and that costs. Waiting until you are chilly before you add a warmer layer is wrong. By the time you are cold you have already let whatever body warmth you had slip away, and then have to expend energy to warm up again, the idea is to keep the warmth in from the start. I know this is easy to say, but can be hard in practice, but when it comes to the outdoors and staying warm and dry, buy the best quality kit you can get, because if you get cold and wet in the middle of nowhere, you are screwed until you can set fire to somebody elses tent to warm up :-).

Cheers for the review. Couple of ideas for cold weather sleeping I use: 1) wear cosy fleece leggings. The thighs lose a lot of heat and keeping the insulation close to the legs is most efficient. Plus, they’re lovely to change into on a cold evening, and if you need to get up in the night you keep your legs warm. 2) Add olive oil or another healthy fat to your food before bed. Digesting fats while asleep generates significant extra internal heat.

Good review as always...thanks for sharing. I find sleeping bags a bit restrictive - I also fidget - so adding a liner would make it more so. I suppose I could get a down quilt - less restrictive - but they are expensive and I can't afford it (and my wife wouldn't be happy!). I sleep in merino long johns and a long sleeve T shirt that adds warmth and helps keep the bag clean. If I wake up cold I shove on a down jacket and that usually works for me. I do, of course, have, and use, a sleep mat in case any one is wondering. It's an Alpkit Cloud Base and in so far as I am aware doesn't have a published R value but works very well. Thinking of getting a thin, solid foam mat to go underneath the Cloud Base in colder weather. Cheers. Ken

Hi Trev. I'm thinking of getting one of these to give me some flexibility to a two season summer bag (10deg comfort) if the temperature falls unexpectedly as it can in the UK. I'm interested to know if you have used it much and if you rate it as worth the money? The Extreme one allegedly adds 14deg to the comfort rating as opposed to the 8deg for yours, both claims I feel must be very optimistic! Cheers, Johnny
