You keep saying that the movement was a copy of the Venus movement. In fact, the Tianjin Watch Company purchased the original tooling from Venus in the 1950s (Venus was looking to fund the development of newer movements) and that is what was used to make the movements for this watch, at least in the 1960's. It's very possible that the current movements are also being made with that tooling, though no one seems to know for sure.

I see some stupid comments here, let me explain; just because its a Chinese movement doesn't mean it is bad necessarily, Chinese have met the Suisse standards a long time ago, if a movement is well-made doesn't matter if its made in China or other places, if you like to pay more for the same watch, by all means, go for it. If you prefer a 20 dollar quartz watch, go for it, apparently, it's your style, I do prefer an automatic, collum wheel chronograph watch.

Agreed! Personally, I am so sick and tired of all the China bashing. These idiots used to do the same with Japanese things, and now they all yell at car dealers for trying to sell them a car that was not made in Japan, while they wave a big-a** flag on their pick-up truck! I seriously do not like them.

I recently got one - a present from my wife for our first wedding anniversary: I chose the watch, she paid for it. I got the Red Star branded one, which is produced by Thomas Leung with the approval of Sea-Gull; I bought the version with the "old" movement, the one without the swan neck regulator, so I paid about $150 for it (the Red Star one with the swan neck movement is around $210-220). I went for the sapphire crystal: it is more practical, but aesthetically the acrylic crystal is better. The acrylic crystal is double-domed, so that the watch is all dial; the sapphire one is single domed, so they added a stainless steel bezel, which makes the dial look smaller and, in a sense, at the bottom of a pit. It is still nice, but a bit claustrophobic: all in all, considering that my Vostoks survived even rugged usage, I would now go for the acrylic one (of course, this one being a present by my very dear wife, it is a lifelong keeper). All in all, it is a wonderful little watch, and I agree with you: no sense in going for the "official" Sea-Gull one, which, by the way, hit the market only in 2018, when Red Star had been making their version for 7 years - as long as it has a Sea-Gull movement, and it looks the part, for me it is legit. On a side note: I successfully removed the blue paint from the crown with some nail polish remover. Fast and very effective.

Thanks for the update, Luca! I was wondering which version you would end up with. I recalled that you had seemed to have done quite a bit of research on the various different manufacturers last time I posted a Seagull video. We can both thank our wives for some pretty nice watches!

@@SuburbanPathfinder yes, indeed. A big thank you to our wives for the watches - and for everything else! By the way: Jody from Just One More Watch put out an interesting investigation video on the "fake Seagull" issue: kzitem.info/news/bejne/xXyC13aanJSZnpg The only fault I find in the video is the fact that he does not mention that HKED is a personal project made in collaboration with Red Star, but that is a very oscure piece of information upon which I stumbled by pure chance while biding my time on Google one night... All in all a pleasant view, and Jody is a very entertaining guy.

I enjoy Jody's channel quite a great deal. If it wasn't for JOMW, I wouldn't have gotten such a good deal on my Certina DS First Ceramic. I got a notice about his recent Seagull video but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet. I think I'll check it out this evening. I'm interested to see what he has to say.

Former Tianjin resident here. The watch you bought most likely has an genuine ST1901 movement with a copied case. The genuine Seagull 1963 has a solid caseback and is sold by the manufacturer Sea-Gull. Beautiful watch nonetheless.

Yes. Issues. I don’t recall exactly because it’s been sitting on my desk for about six months, waiting to go to my watchmaker for service. But, IIRC, it started running rather fast and stopping intermittently. I think I needs a clean and lube. These movements are notorious for being shipped from the factory dry. I’ll post an update once I’ve had a chance to get it serviced.

The fact you have some problems with the chrono is that the Chinese are not that accurate on assembling the movement. And i mean they forget to lube the damn thing. And that's a shame because it is a great movement. So although it is new, you can bring it in for service, get it cleaned and lubricated. Ask the juweler if he found fingerprints on the movement? Hahaha i bet he did! You will see, it last for years.

I’ve read that the Seagull movements often leave the factory with little to no lube. Mine has started acting weird as well. I’m going to see what my watchmaker will charge for a clean and lube on this one.
