I used to think that. My last system was an AT4 sierra and I decided I wanted to only add the cleanest bass possible. I wired my amp to 8ohms with a dual 12 setup on a sealed box. It was literally too clean. The base was obviously separate from the midst and lows. Without that mild drone/distortion, my bass didn't blend with the rest of the audio. It really depends on application in my opinion. I don't have a favorite anymore

I do sealed box. Just my personal preference and it does well with all music in my opinion. I can make my sealed version just as loud as any other versions. Free air is roughly 2 to 3 decibels more anyways with same set ups as sealed. Sealed boxes are smaller too. 🤷🏼♂️just saying

@@Huckleberry54😂 you can not make any sealed box as load as a ported bandpass or any other type of box 😂. A basic to manufacture spec ported box is a +6 db at tuning.. you would literally have to run 2x the driver on 2x the power to achieve a 6bd increase sealed.. for example.. a single 12” x brand sealed at 1.25 cubes on 100w.. you would need 2 12’s on 200w each at 2.5net to achieve the exact same db as that same 12 in a 2cube box on that same original 100w As for those that say it’s more musical sealed or it’s not boomy etc.. I take that same driver out in in 1.5 ported and get just a +3 db rise at tune the roll off will be very equal to a sealed box the responsiveness wil be very similar yet still +3 db louder.. so now you would have to run 2 of the same drivers still in a 2.5 box to achieve the same output. The only thing you gain here is you can now send just the same 100w to them yet you’re still down 3bd 😂😂. Sound is simple electromechanical math.. you can’t beat it.. saying you can make a seal box as loud as a ported box or bandpass box is equal to saying 1+1=3 😅 It’s simple math and science.. Now can x brand sub in a sealed box be louder then y brand in a ported box.. yes.. The only reason noobs think they can make a sealed box louder is cause they don’t understand how to get proper clean power to a sub. So what a seal box does is because it’s got soo much internal air resistance (think of it like a spring helping your sub) it’s easier to overpower the driver wo damaging it. It’s much more forgiving.. as such maybe you can make it a little louder.. but apples to apples this is physically impossible when all things are equal.. it’s not even close.. Last thing I’ll tell you and I hope you’re soaking this in with open mind and learning.. You can if you have say a 1000w sub but can only afford a quality high dampening and efficient amp that is 500w.. you can take that 2cube ported box.. increase it to 3-3.25 maybe even 4 depending on the mechanical’s of that sub.. and actually get it to perform like a sub on the full 1000w power cause you basically by greatly over sizing the box made it respond like a free air but still with the db gains of the port.. a lot of carfull port sizing magic has to take place here as well and only the best builders out there are capable of this.. As for free air that is the least “loud” setup of the types of mounting a driver. It’s also very expensive to do with any amount of sizable output.. and I’m pretty sure what you’re referring to as “free air” actually isn’t.. it’s baffled.. free air would be the speakers in the rear deck of a typical car.. baffled would be more like the speakers in the doors.. A baffled setup can be very loud.. infact it’s what many competitors use in a sort.. what you’re doing is wallong off a section of the vehicle and turning the vehicle into the box.. this takes a or of money and time and effort to make the vehicle airtight.. that truck flex people like to brag about.. that’s costing them sound cause it’s escaping through the gaps between the trunk and the car.. that sounds like shit, and is wasted power and money in terms of sound output. Window flex door flex all the same.. Now when it comes to a 6th order bandpass.. that is essentially what every vehicle is with a ported box to start with. Only the vehicle is half the box.. A sealed box in a vehicle is essentially a 4th order bandpass system.. What most petiole don’t realize is the reason the bass gets deeper and louder when you crack the windows.. its cause you just ported your car which in a round about way no matter the enclosure tyoe. I’ve been at this game almost 30 years now.. have records in the top 10 some even top 5 still over 20 years old now. I set those with a sealed box mind you but with the understanding that the cabin is part of the system and the box and I build my entire setup around that fact from air space in the box to resonate frequency of the vehicle to the power I had to give.. But end of the day.. there isn’t a single apples to apples sealed setup that can in any way be even close to as “loud” as a porter or bandpass setup. I don’t care if the manufacture says you can’t out the sub in a ported box it can be done and it will be louder. There isn’t a single sub sold today, 10 years ago or 30 years ago that this doesn’t apply to that I’m know of. And the last time I competed with 4 15’s sealed on 2k watts in an old school extended cab half wall.. the guy I placed second to was running 4 12’s sold at Walmart in a ported box on 1500w had a total of about $1500 in his entire system hitting 156.9 and I had over 10g in my setup at the time.. let that sink in..

I remember back in the day never used sealed. But if you only had your ported box amplified and other speakers hooked up to factory. You could be satisfied. With the band pass boxes fourth orders and up being set to a particular frequency for say. You really need the rest of your interior speakers to be amplified to get that true enjoyment everything balanced.

I have a Nissan versa hatch back and will go either 4th order bandpass tuned to 50hz which will give a bandwith from 35hz to 67hz or ported for a single 12'' and if I do go ported which position of sub and port will give the best sq/output, sub up, port up, etc. I listen to mostly EDM, rock, 80's and a couple of rap, hip hop, thanks

I have a 16" tall by 40" wide by 16" to 32" deep space in my truck bed for a subwoofer enclosure. I will be unable to effectively seal an exposed speaker cone to the blow-through hole, and I'm also afraid the blow-through hole is gonna be fairly small in height (IE 10") but can be up to 40" wide (matching max box width). I can't fit more than a 12" sub vertically/face mounted, however, with the right 15 I may be able to fit it down or up firing. (Calculated with 1" MDF to account for displacements using Rockford's box wizard, the 32" depth box is 9.24cu-ft gross internal, a 24" depth would be 6.77cu-ft, and a 16" depth box would be 4.31cu-ft) I don't want to spend more than $700 or so on subwoofers and IDC if that's 1, 2, or 10 of them. I also don't want to send more than about 3k watts to the subs, either. Beyond that, I'm looking to have a very versatile and musical sub-stage while also hitting 140-150DB and extending down to the mid-20s and up to 70-80hz or so if possible. I don't think I currently listen to anything that hits the mid-20hz range, but I can guarantee if I had access to a system that could do it, I would find some stuff to listen to that did it. The main thing that comes to mind is a 23hz rebass of Chevelle's song "Red" I'm willing to put the time into researching box construction and build any box that will fit into that space and port into the cab with the available cutout. I mostly listen to Rap, the 2000s emo-era/punk rock, "butt rock", and EDM found on Bass Nation (IDK the specific genre, but Yaboii, Coste, and Jaeger are some examples of artists), but also will dip into classic rock and pop (classic and current) from time to time, as well. So my question to you is, what sub(s) and box type should I be looking at, generally speaking?

What's your opinion on a setup with 8"s. I listen to mostly hop hop with the 808s . I currently have a trio of skar ix8s on a ct sounds 1500.1d at about 1.33 ohm. In a JL audio 8.3 microsub box sealed. They are very clear and accurate but I would like to keep the power high but tackle the lows more . I like when you said anything 30Hz and below because I was thinking that was a sweet spot for lows in rap. I have an SUV and space is a concern as I don't want to take up too much space this the reason for the microsub box. Most confusing ever to chose best enclosure for your sub. Rock music in a sealed box gives a very nice thumb on the drum bass also tight accurate bass. While for Rap music ported really hits hard and loud. But at times certain Rap songs did very well on the sealed box. Then the bandpass I found very deep and tight bass kinda best of both worlds. Space is probably the biggest issue among boxes but if you crave insane bass unfortunately you usually giving up most your trunk space which wifey will always have a problem with.... 🔊

I want to design a common subbox for both and then build, So that it produces maximum volume and volume, as well as deep bass and sufficient vibration (the best and most optimal mode). However, the space limit for this subbox should also be considered, which can be up to 35-40 cm wide, up to 50-60 cm long and up to 70 cm high. In the speaker specifications, the minimum response frequency of the 32 Hz speaker is written, which is probably mentioned with its box.

I’ve done different ways, and all things the same I’d get a single amp to run both. As far as capacitors, do your research from legit car audio fanatics. Those small rating capacitors really don’t do anything. Super capacitors (500 farad plus) is the way to go if you want capacitors.

@@NextLevelCarAudio yes, I’m still in the research to make sure everything is air tight. Running 2 mono block amps to each sub, 2(12”) subs, big 3 upgrade, upgrade the wiring, super cap. The mono block amps I’m looking at is accurately rated for the subs. Thank you for explaining to fuse just before the amp too. It makes sense in case some of that current slips through and kills the amp. Let me know if I’m getting closer to ready to plan the build

Okay so this gonna be a long form question and I apologize but I invite everyone to reply with their own answers. I just got my first 10” alpine sub and it is currently in a cheap homemade ported box that the guy I bought it from made. It’s not tuned or anything and to my (untrained) ears it sounds just fine for what I need, I’m not looking for anything overwhelmingly loud or anything crazy just some nice deep bass. I have it in the trunk of my 11 genesis coupe but I’m definitely an aesthetics guy and want to build my own box as to seal the sides of the trunk and have it look nice. I think from what I’ve learned I need to go with a sealed box. Now, do I need to have a certain volume of air inside the box? Im mainly concerned about the box I build being to big and thus holding the sub back from what it would best perform at. Thanks in advanced!

Each sub should have its own recommended air space requirements per the manufacturer. For sealed and ported enclosures. Just need to do some research for your specific sub. Sealed will give you deep right bass while ported will give you more bass but typically is more boomy. Hope that helps

This is kinda off topic.. But I would like to ask.. I asked this on another channel, and got an answer.. Question: is enclosure volume the same No matter the shape of the enclosure? And or does the shape of the enclosure affect the actual sound of the bass? Sorry 2 questions there
@NextLevelCarAudio
3 жыл бұрын
As long as it’s calculated properly any shape can be made to be the same as any other shape to match volume. Sealed can be any shape, but ported you need to consider the path of sound waves inside the enclosure, distance of woofer from rear baffle, port orientation/size etc...

Its trial and error with bandpass or ported but sealed is way more forgiving and always sounds better. Its hard for a sub in a sealed to sound bad but in ported thats always the case . And SEALED CAN GO REALLY LOUD N LOW.

There’s a competition I go to that they bass box, but I just wanna go to have fun nothing serious like the other guys, but at the end of the day I drive my truck every weekend, and sometimes I’m in the mood to hear punchy bass, sometimes I’m in the mood for the lows (30hz). Agreed with sealed for sq, ported just doesn’t sound as clean and you lose some of the detail imo. I’ve tried single sub sealed, single sub rear loaded horn, dual sub sealed, dual sub ported. All the same sub mind you! I prefer only one sub for the sound quality as I feel dual subs isn’t as clean, even in sealed alignments. Just my own personal experience.

Notes on ported boxes and why they are popular: playing at the tuning frequency in a ported box is actually most efficient. You can exceed the power handling of the driver without exceeding its xmax. So you can dump 1000 watts into a speaker rated for 350 watts RMS for a short period of time and it will sound great as long as the voicecoil doesn't burn up. As long as you are not playing sine waves for long periods of time your overall power handling is best at the tuning frequency of your enclosure. When playing the same frequency as that which your enclosure is tuned to you will notice that the driver moves very little and the port/vent is producing the most sound. This is how you can check the real tuning frequency of your box. Use a tone generator and test to see - at what frequency the speaker resembles conditions I descibed above. So the huge advantage of ported boxes is that you can use the fact that the cone of the driver moves so little and pump more power in around that frequncy (via EQ) to amplify frequencies that the speaker would otherwise be rolling off had it been in a sealed box. By doing this you can EITHER extend the "bass shelf" or how deep and low the speaker can play at the cost of a steeper rolloff below the tuning frequency OR by tuning the enclosure to a higher frequency you can get a lot more amplification but at the cost of an even steeper rolloff below and above the tuning frequency. You are using the resonance of air inside the box to get the port to start making sound waves in phase with the speaker and getting an amplification around that frequency. Tune low for SQ, tune high for SPL.

A sealed box having more solid bass than a ported is not 100% accurate. It depends on the box design. My current build has taken out the sun roof and broke the seal on my windshield which is glued in with just 3500 watts rms. I have short Videos on here showing it. Search for my name to see videos. Videos on audio dont give a system justice since it is limited to what you are playing it on. I built my box with a back plate so it can be used sealed or slot ported
