Thanks for featuring my favorite Seals & Crofts track. I produced and played guitar on it. Harvey Mason drums, Wilton Felder bass, David Paich piano (pre Toto). Jim Seals on sax and Dash Crofts had a whole career as members of The Champs before becoming the duo, Seals and Crofts. And in between we were a cover band in the LA clubs> We are all jazz fans and played a lot of it in our club gigs. Crofts was a great jazz drummer and Seals was probably the best sax player I've had the pleasure of playing with and I've played with many. Ironically the tune (So What) was never thought of or mentioned during the writing or production of Diamond Girl. However I agree the vamp is very close to the Miles Davis tune which we've played many times.

Diamond Girl, their 5th studio album from 1973. This was their follow-up to "Summer Breeze" which had an amazing guitar riff, mandolin and harmonies from heaven. For Diamond girl, they brought in future members from Toto to add organs pianos and drums. They wanted to expand their songs to be inclusive of rock. And boy oh boy this song is laden with rock. The instrumentation is mind blowing. Saturated with such powerful and satisfying pleasure, their harmonies are some of the best. Glad you loved it Harri, 💎💎💎, indeed. Thanks Harri and Imadrummin. Seals and Crofts were one of my favorite artists back in the day. I had all their albums and saw them in concert three times. Because of them, the mandolin became my favorite string instrument. They have numerous songs that I love and it's very hard to name them all. But three of their lesser known songs that I recommend are "Windflowers", "Follow Me" and "The Boy Down The Road".

Harri, you evidently recognize the bass line from Miles’ “So What” from Kind of Blue but I doubt S&C had any idea they were quoting Miles Davis or working in a modal scale. The producer for this album was Louis Shelton (prolific session guitarist - he played lead gtr on Boz Scaggs’ “Low Down” and the flamenco guitar on The Monkees’ “Valleri”). Shelton plays the solo on this track too. Two of the members of Toto are in the backing band as well. If anyone was aware of borrowing from Miles, it was probably David Paich who seems to playing Bill Evans’ piano intro to “So What.” In 2012, jazz guitarist John Pizzarelli made this connection explicit when he absolutely grafted “So What’s” chord progression onto his cover of “Diamond Girl.” Critics at the time thought Pizzarelli was too flippant but he did hear the same things we all do. Love the reaction, Harri.

Every day I am reminded of the fact that I am so glad that I was born in 1975. A time when music was actually music, not the talentless soulless garbage that permeates society today. A time when I didn't have to be bombarded with weirdo ideologies every day,and a time when children could enjoy life being outside playing and using their imagination for entertainment. Now it seems like kids are growing up believing true life exists in a man made fake digital reality. It's quite sad to see what society has become in recent years.
