His portrayal of the evil Sgt. Obadiah Hakeswill was sheer brilliance. Only an actor of his quality could carry it off so well, especially when Hakeswill is before the firing squad.

My favourite two episodes of Sharpe are the two with Sergeant Hakeswill in them. Pete Postlethwaite was simply outstanding. "Oooh said that?"

Perhaps the most perfect villain in television history! Obidiah Hakeswill was bereft of a single mitigating virtue... besides being as mad as a hatter.

I remember that Bernard Cornwell said that Pete's portrayal was better than than the character in his early books. As a result, in his following books, he wrote the character with Pete's portrayal in mind. I've not read the books yet, so I wonder, if you noticed this.

@William Lee I have not gotten into Peninsula campaign yet. Sharpe's Rifles was written in 88? and I'm a hold out for hard covers and it's a bit expensive. I may buckle and buy the paperback. I don't know. If anything, they trim the story down I bet.

Pete was a wonderful actor who made so many characters his own - after seeing him in the role, it was almost impossible to imagine anyone else as that character. Obadiah Hakeswill was one such example, but Pete's performance in "Brassed Off" and so many other productions were other instances where he stole the show, as the saying goes. R.I.P. Pete, and thanks for everything that you brought to the roles you played.
