The day before the next search for Austin, my search partner dropped out. I scrambled to find some else to go along, not wanting to search the rocks and cliffs of Sawtooth Mountain alone. The mountain shrouded herself as we climbed, an attempt to hide her secrets.
I started thinking about vision quests and rights of passage from one generation to the next. Why is a generational blessing and passing of pride missing from our culture? How do people try to find it on their own?

RECAP:
After hearing years of reports about people who seem to disappear into the wild, I decided to dig a little deeper.
On August 6, 2016 I set out to find Austin Oldfield, who has been missing for 10 months. Austin left Kentucky for a month long camping trip in the Cascades Mountains, not far from Portland, Oregon. Before he vanished, two hunters witnessed him acting strangely.
I trace his last known steps and set up a grid to comb the forest for clues. His disappearance caused me to ask- Why did Austin disappear? What where his motives? Where might he have gone. How can I avoid hazards on my own adventures?
