It amazes me how things like that survive. You'd think, as narrow and tall it is, that this would have been the first to disappear and the things in ruins would have survived instead.

only 4.47 miles from the parking at Duncannon according to Google Earth where the stack is barely visible at the GPS coordinates. cool video and awesome to see something that is 160 years old still standing out in the wilderness alone.

so cool to see that stack and it has weathered everything for decades and has not fell. Ironically when the walls of stones have toppled over.

I drove in from the opposite way off Pine Hill Road. It's a shorter walk too.

Yes that's the reservoir, and the cabins are I believe a place where the scouts go to camp in summer.

that stack is astounding how do they get it so tall? the workmanship must have been top of the line for it to still be standing thanks for taking me along

Thank you. I wonder how the sawmill was powered since there is this stack. In my area of PA, sawmills were water powered. The only stacks we see remaining here (like Greenwood Furnace) belonged to iron smelting operations.

I'm guessing maybe it used steam power, there is a water source nearby

After obtaining your GPS Coordinates, there seems to be a closer parking area just off Pine Hill Road in Rye Township where you can walk less than a mile and a half to the Duncannon Stack. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

You cant enter from PineHill side. Private Property. My family and i used to hunt all over from Pine Side all the way back to chimney. We called it the swamp road. That was in the 90's. Today you got people who patrol that road who lives on top of mountain, who dosnt even own the property, but watches over it for the owners. Real Ahole people. That road used to be open to hunters to drive back, but people who live there want it all to them selves....the furthest you can go is to end of the duncannon borrow watershed property. The guy who owns the pine hill parking lot, is a real ahole, he patrols his property with an AR15 and chases everyone off.

TWW, glad you found the place! For those reading this, it's about 4.3+ miles from the recycling center. You'll go past some rock barriers in the road, go a little ways, then bear right down a smaller trail. The Pine Hill side is closer, but you will be crossing through Private Property signs. If you set off from the Duncannon side and come to some gates, you have gone too far. Up until the gates, I'm under the impression that the road is part of the watershed property. I could be wrong, but I've seen no signage suggesting otherwise. Those cabins are still used by an scouting (probably) organization. I was running in the area and they had a sign up limiting vehicle traffic back there during some sort of camping activity. Hopefully everyone reading this and seeking out The Stack is cool with keeping it in good shape. Nearby Hawk Rock sometimes gets trashed (garbage, graffiti, etc.) by mooks who have no respect for the Great Outdoors.

hate to hear that bears are killed. it already looks like the woods are barren of animals. do we want to wipe out the animal kingdom? I'm praying for the bears to survive in a cruel world.
