I have used Eley for the prior 80 rounds in the RimX. The chamber was 'Smithed' for Lapua, but I wanted to use some supply of Eley.
Today it was time to switch to Lapua, its chosen round.
I thought 15-20 rounds for fouling would probably foul the barrel enough to make for a sufficient change over. I in fact shot 30 rounds for sighting in and fouling. This was followed with target number 1. The results were 250 and 2X. It was a challenging shoot just to keep the 250. Not a very good showing for this DPG RimX build.
After a several minute break we were called back to the firing line for the second target. I was hoping for a better result.
The better result came. At the start of target #2 there were now 60 rounds of Lapua down the barrel (from sight-in and target #1) since changing from Eley. It was a much more relaxed shoot when the POA met the POI. The feel was obvious and each shot seemed to stage a positive setting for the next.
I had thought in the past, 10-20 rounds would suffice for barrel seasoning/fouling. I now feel 50-60 rounds is probably closer to what is needed.
I have read in the past that the top 'bench' shooters will shoot at least 1 and at time 2-3 boxes for fouling prep. I think I get it now!
