In Greece you'd pay around 30 dollars for all this and the quality would be way way higher. The pastitsio and chicken pita didn't look good and the dolmadakia seem to be straight out of a 2 dollar can. Come to Greece and eat the real thing, you'll never wanna leave

I know i am a little bit late on the party but i'll give you something to try again if you want to. All those you tried, if you had on the side feta cheese with oregano and olive oil and take a bite of the feta cheese with every bite of the rest of the food, you won't believe how amazing it goes together. Also chicken soup goes amazing with the feta cheese and the pita bread should have been seasoned with oregano, salt and olive oil to go well with the soup. A great finisher to wash your mouth at the end is a greek salad.

Unfortunately many of those supposed tavernas have been too Americanized in their way of making food and Greek food prides in freshness and as you said herbs along with hefty doses of spices. So many that come here are shocked and fall in love with the real thing. Much of our cousine is influenced by the middle east cousine (we were under Ottoman rule after all for 400 years) as we have very similar dishes with our neighbors and the rest of the Balkan countries. For example dolma is a of Turkish origin and literally means wrapped. In almost every Balkan country there's a variation of that dish. We also have strong influences from our ancestors that came in Greece in 1922 (and later from Istanbul after the pogroms there) me included. From my mothers side her mother and grandmother were from Smyrna and we still use many of those recipes in our cooking.

Do you consider gyros Greek or Turkish in origin? Reason I ask is I noticed a lot of Turkish places around here (eastern Bergen County) have gyros…dolma as well like you said.
@moonwalker9266

@@th6252 Yes I consider it Turkish in origin. It came here in Greece more probably after the war in 1922. We just use pork more instead of lamb and beef they make it with. The Ottoman cuisine is all over the Balkans with variations of course.
