Introduction to secondary treatment processes/ Biological Processes for Sewage Treatment #gtu_exam #civilengineering #gatecivil #gatecivil2024 #gatecivilengineering @SANDEEPJYANI
Biological treatment Processes:
Bacteria and other microorganisms in the search of food, breakdown complex organic matter into simple and more stable substances.
Sewage is rich in organic matter serve as food for bacteria , hence large quantity of bacteria remain active in the sewage.
Biological unit processes are those in which removal of contaminants are brought about by biological activity
The treatment of sewage using bacteria and other microorganisms is called secondary or biological treatment of sewage/ wastewater.
Fungi, algae, ciliate protozoa, worms etc supplement the bacterial digestion.
Secondary (Biological) Treatment ( Unit processes):
Effluent of primary sedimentation is subjected to secondary treatment.
In biological treatment of wastewater, the objectives are to coagulate and remove the non settleable colloidal solids and to stabilize the organic matter.
The dissolved and colloidal organic matter in waste water/sewage is removed by aerobic or anaerobic processes
Biological processes are classified by the oxygen dependence and type of growth conditions of the primary microorganisms responsible for waste treatment.
1) Classification of Biological Treatment processes as per the availability and utilization of oxygen
Aerobic Processes (In presence of Oxygen)
Anaerobic (In absence of Oxygen)
(2) Classification based on the growth conditions in the reactor :
Secondary treatment processes may be classified into:
Attached (film) growth process
Suspended growth process
Combined process
