I certainly would not want to be those two soldiers positioned right next to Reinhardt.

Oh they would have been ok, the german prisoners knew very well that if they tried anything, then they would have been pretty much slaughtered.

This episode was based on the following real event, which shall forever remain a stain on the Canadian Armed Forces for allowing such a despicable act . The 13 May 1945 German the deserters execution occurred five days after the capitulation of Nazi Germany along with the Wehrmacht armed forces in World War II, when an illegal court martial, composed of the captured and disarmed German officers kept under Allied guard in Amsterdam, Netherlands imposed a death sentence upon two former German deserters from the Kriegsmarine, Bruno Dorfer and Rainer Beck , a half-Jewish conscript who had deserted to avoid being killed. The show trial occurred in an abandoned Ford Motor Company assembly plant outside Amsterdam, which at the time was a prisoner-of-war camp run by the Canadian Army.

Greetings Interesting comment but war produces unknown and uncivilized emotional behavior when bullets are flying. Death tests man's conscience and the justification of killing while in uniform. In the film Von Ryan's express (fantasy fiction), British/America POWs are guarded by Italian military. The war effort for the axis becomes limp. Later, Italian guards split, but Major Battaglia (commandant) has been captured. Major Fincham (British) wants to hold a court martial then immediately put Battaglia in front of a firing squad. This action is countermanded by Colonel Ryan (American). In the film Stalag 17, POWs suspect a traitor within its ranks. They have no recourse for military justice. They gather evidence and if you saw the film you know the outcome. Military Code of Conduct is used even if these actions were illegal. In those scenes the traitor does not have legal representation (as if he would be allowed to under those circumstances). Can POWs convene as a body of military court? Under the Geneva convention military code of justice is allowed. There are incidents where a SGT., for example has shot his own man for cowardice or under the pretense of protecting the group by getting rid of someone. Wearing a uniform during war time conditions fosters a mind set for justice under numerous circumstances. You depend on your shipmate or with someone in the foxhole. You survive and you become brothers in arms. Was it the right decision to allow Major Reinhardt a firing squad? Was it the right decision to let the POW Kessler go? When I have ambivalent feelings or opinions (commercial interests benefit) surrounding war or riots and gangland fighting I flash back to "War is a Racket" written by Major General Smedley D. Butler. This series by British writers, actors, producers, all the crew members and extras stimulated my appreciation for their work ethic and efforts. My affinity for having the ability to perform British style drama for visualizing history and preserving it (Secret Army) through film stands at the top within the arts.
