Exploring the old Monte Urpinu quarry in Cagliari we came across an old tunnel hidden from view, probably used as a refuge during the Second World War.
The entrance is hardly visible, narrow and largely obstructed by boulders, but once inside, unexpectedly large rooms welcome us and probably inhabited by travelers who take refuge there.
The gallery develops on the same level and has two entrances to the two ends, one of which is almost completely obstructed by the collapses.
The entrance is surmounted by an old wooden beam and once inside you go down a couple of meters between the stones.
The first room is very large and with a high ceiling, which immediately divides two galleries.
The tunnel on the left is the largest and once you get to the bottom there is a 90 ° curve to the right, which then continues along the side of the mountain.
Using a torch, we observe different objects of daily life such as clothes, camp beds, chairs, vases, baskets, but also old doors, metal props, wooden beams and more.
We notice several points where the wall has been blackened by the fires, which are lit by the visitors of the gallery.
The left wall of the gallery was reinforced with a brick wall which met with the limestone rock at the top, forming an irregular triangle that reaches the floor from the ceiling.
The gallery on the right of the entrance crosses after a few meters with the larger one on the left and, while it continues in depth, its width decreases considerably, so as to make us proceed slightly bent.
Proceeding along the passage, completely in the dark and illuminated only by the torch, the holes where the explosive was inserted to make it shine to dig the tunnels faster are evident.
After a few meters the narrow passage leads to a third room; the ceiling is slightly higher and allows you to stand, and there is a cabinet and an ironing board.
Going further we explore another passage on the right, an "S" shaped tunnel that leads to what appears to be a secondary exit, almost completely obstructed.
Going back to the main entrance, we notice different strands of rock, often with more or less recent engravings of passing lovers rather than female artistic representations.
I leave you to the video, good vision.
