Given that the house of the future was made entirely of plastic I should think that complete removal could have been done quite swiftly by dropping a single lit-match on the furnishings.

I grew up down the street from Disneyland and went there countless times throughout the years. To this day, the Monsanto House of the Future was my all-time favorite attraction! I was devastated when it was demolished. The photos don't do it justice. Disney should have sold it! I would love to live in that house!

You may have missed it, but in the Dream Home sits a small tabletop model of the original "House of the Future" BTW, "Adventure Thru Inner Space" was awesome. The 1967 New Tomorrowland was the greatest. Wish it were still intact.

I went to Disneyland, the first time, when I was 8 years old. That was the only time I got to see Monsanto's House of the Future. The attraction was closed, so we didn't get to go through it, but, it was still there and I thought, at the time, that it was the coolest house I had ever seen. I also remember the trip through inner-space attraction, where you are shrunk down, so small, so you can take a trip through the human body. Next to the Haunted House and the Pirates of the Caribbean rides, these two attractions, were my favorites. I had hoped that the Monsanto House was moved to another site or museum. It should never have been torn down. It was just that unique and space-agey.

I've been wondering about the inner-space ride. What exactly was that ride like? It seems like an interesting concept and I'm having a hard time figuring out how Disney pulled it off.
@duanscott2490
9 жыл бұрын
joeylantis22 It was the same "Omni Mover" ride type as the Haunted Mansion's "doom buggies and Ariel's "clam shells". As you ride through, you are shrunk down eventually to the size of an H2O molecule inside of a snowflake. It was a fun ride.

I was 8, the first time I got to experience the inner space ride. It blew me away! After I got home, I would have dreams of being on a petri dish and I could see that eyeball looking at me through the microscope lens. I liked seeing the tiny seats get small and I really thought that was what happened to us, on that ride. Ah, the imagination of a kid. Thanks for the comment, Mike. You just took me on that ride, one more time. Whee! Have a great week! =)

I went to Disneyland the first day it was open to the public. I was a little kid about 6 1/2 years old and had been waiting for a long time. It was a pretty big deal back then. I have been back to Disney land several times since then. I have to say that for me the fun factor of going to Disneyland peaked in the late 70's can't say if it was the park itself or just me being older. Now in my 60's I don't think wild horses could drag me.

I'd love to see a video like this about the long defunct Flying Saucer ride! That was the coolest ride in the park when I was a kid. Everyone sat on top of a personal saucer that floated on a cushion of high-pressure air, allowing you to tilt the saucer and shoot off in the direction of the tilt. It was like futuristic bumper cars. At the end of the ride a giant arm would sweep across the ride corral and gather the moving saucers into a tight bunch, allowing the other half of the saucers to start moving. I never heard of injuries on this ride but it wasn't very tightly controlled (a hallmark of Disney rides) and I'm sure there were liability issues.

With today's technology they could have lifted that thing out in sections, moved it to another located and put it all back together. I think its worse than that. All over the world they tear down fantastic structures from the past with no thought at all. Loved this video Justin. Hey, maybe you can do a video about the Disney College Program and other internships that Disney offers. I believe that it's something that many people do not know about and I think it would be awesome way to promote these educational opportunities to students. Also, there is a ton of history to it from how it started off at Walt Disney World with only 200 students, to how it has made its way to Disneyland and how it now caters to around 5,000 students from all around the world in both California and Florida. Plus, I don't think guests realize how much they actually interact with the students participating in the program. Students work anywhere from main gates, to custodial, attractions, merchandise, and food and beverage. Heck, maybe you can talk to a few of them in the parks. I just think this would be a pretty neat topic to talk about and a way to promote an awesome internship that Disney offers to college students.

Just to pick a minor historical nit: the 'baby boom' which you mention in your intro was more than "just beginning" when Disneyland opened and when the House of the Future was created, since that era has been defined as occurring between (approximately) 1946-1964. That said, as both one who experienced the Disney designed/supported attractions at the 1964 Worlds Fair and as a former Cast Member (at the East Coast branch of the 'Mouse Factory') I want to thank you for sharing this.
