A quick check is to unbolt the fuel pump from the crank case. Once you have it away from the crank case (with the fuel lines still attached,) squeeze the primer bulb a few times. If fuel comes out of the port on the back of the fuel pump, you know the diaphram is leaking fuel into the crank case. I chased this same problem for a week.

When the motors runs, does it leave an oil/gas spill in the water? 4. How many HP and does the motor have 2 cylenders? 5. check the lower spark plug, after it has been running for a moment, Is it fowled and does it smell like gas? 5. if you have rabbit ears for your motor, you can do a test by hooking up a garden hose. ...Sorry for the direct first question but im tired of being hated by people who have no idea about me, just based on my race, i wouuld love to help out a fellow Red Blooded American and you look like a man. Let me get a stuck diap, isn't it? Crazy 99 point, d*** 99% of the time. Someone brings me a motor work done. Usually, unless it's obvious, it's usually fuel bro. Every mechanic Is well aware of this? It's actually a poor design. If you ask me, I'm not a fan of die. Fram pumps that style of pump. There is a much better way for them to gravity theme. Without having to click the clock. And be made of rubber and eventually give out, but let's face it. Everything is a form of designed obsolescence. I swear they make these motors not to break any certain time. Because, with proper care, and preventative maintenance You can really get a hell of a long life on these murders but they are not turn key and, forget There are so many possibilities with engines. I personally love working on them as a hobby. I think they should be implemented in school. How did your motor idle when this happened. The exact same thing happened to my Mercury 90 2 stroke (1983) Was running perfect and then all of the sudden started popping and bogging down. But it idled fine. I can tell it's running super rich when it's bogging. Mine has 6 cylinders and 3 carbs, and it sound like when I give it full throttle, I'm only running on 4 cylinders. I'm wondering if this could be my problem. A carb rebuild will cost me about $800 for all 3. I'd hate to spend all that money and still have my same problem.

well, i hired a 20 year mech and he couldnt figure it out. he thought to start with the carb, floats,pens and tunning. that did nothing. i would say that basically did everything i could to the fuel system to fix it to no avail. how i found out it was the pump was by trying the "pressure test" on the bulb. if the fuel line bulb loses pressure after pumping it to normal firmness, you hhave a leak. id say about 1 minute.

Great tip 👍🏼 Another possible culprit for blooding outboards is if you have a primer solenoid they tend to leak and sometimes unplugging the tiny hose to check shows no sign but when plugged the pressure causes a leak so best thing to do is pinch tight the fuel line going to or from electric primer solenoid.

@gonefishing1939

That makes sense. i think i would do as you are, Start with the fuel pump. My next big question would be the baffles reeds. When you take off the carb, You will see the baffles, they look like flat shinny rectangles that are made of flat flexable sheets of stainless. i may also be that one or more of them are frozen shut and not allowing air fuel mixture in, maybe even damaged. they act like the valuves on a v8 engine, open and close to let mixed fuel in with each stroke but shut to create a one direction flow into the head.

@gonefishing1939

bogging down? i know it sounds crazy but there are 2 different sounds when it boggs down. one is real theouty and the other sounds to lean. I do feel its important to still check the fuel pump diophram because you said chocking motor makes it worse. if it were lean, applying a little chock should make it rev up, not down.
@busdriver1469
4 жыл бұрын
Gone Fishing Yes but IT drags air in between the reed and carb so when you put down the choke intstead of getting more fuel an less air(a richer mix...) IT sucks more air in between the carbs and Even less gasoline....so IT boggs down....to much air in relation to gas...

Hi, it looks the same to mine evinrude 4pk. But only happens with external fuel supply. The small tank on the engine runs the fuel, after selecting, direct to the carburator, due to gravity force. So in this case use the internal tank for trouble shooting.

that makes alot of sense. It really is amazing how on a fuel line the has to create negitive pressure to draw fuel from tanks needs to be perfect with no holes, even the smallest of pin hole can drop pressure ar add bubbles in fuel line creating vaper locks in line. thanks for the insight on this post.

Thanks for sharing..diaphram type fuel pumps generally need replacing or at minimum inspection every 100 hrs in most service manuals.

I have a 2.5hp merc 4 stroke that floods and boggs down. Stalls, then will not restart. Dealer replaced the carb under warranty , still stalls out. I change out the fuel pump now.

i think your doing the right thing. Its very rare the the card will flood out an outboard after its running. From everything im learning, the only thing that does that is a bad fuel pump based on crank case pressures. when it leaks, it actually sucks fuel from the pump into the crank case. I hope you let me know how it turns out for you, sounds like its a fuel pump. im glad my vid helped you.

@@gonefishing1939 I have found here in Canada parts are hard to come by for those little motors. I will have to use a fuel pump from a garden tractor and see if it makes a difference. Functions the same but is configured different. Thanks for your information and help. My outboard was about to have a boating accident before I saw your video.

@@Mascotal when you take the fuel pump apart, your going to see a black fabric, looks like its coated in rubber. thats the problem, it gets a little hole in it around the area were the motor pressure changes and makes it pump in and out. maybe you can look online for it. also, maybe amazon. im really wishing the best for you. i will help in any way i can my friend. do you have year and make of motor, if so, i can help you look for the part. should only cost about $20 or $30 us dollars

@@gonefishing1939 Thanks for your help. I have checked Amazon and the net for parts but haven't had much luck. Not to worry, I already have a couple of new lawn mower pumps on hand so I will give that a try first. To tell the truth I don't understand the need for a pump on my motor in the first place. Gravity should work just fine.

thats how i figured out my pump was bad as well. if it losses presure in the bulb. its a leak, if you dont see leak, its the pump. nothing to do with carb, i learned that the hard way. glad i could help. should only cost ya about $30

yep, sounds like fuel pump. as pressure increases, more fuel goes into crank case.

No oil or gas in dock. Just replaced my gas tank and fuel line to motor. Thinking it may be fitting inside gas tank loosing pressure or hand pump.
@gonefishing1939

@@MrLeonides1000 hmm, 1st i would do a pressure test on the bulb to see if pressre is being lost. also this will show if fuel pump has a hole in it. Do you use rabbit ears when you run it on land? if so, do you get a oily frothy mix in exaust water. i also agree, you may have a leak on the vaccume side of fuel line between bulb and gas tank.
@gonefishing1939

@@MrLeonides1000 i dont think you have a flooded float in the carb. if the float sinks, it would not get any fuel to motor so i think thats good., Sound right?

Not much of a mechanic if he could not figure that out. It's only two cylinders and a single carb, could not be an easier motor.
