When I was little (80's) finding coriander/cilantro at the store was nearly impossible so older American desis and their parents usually use EVERYTHING stems too. Aunties started growing it and sharing it but it was like a commodity you could never have enough.

American here. I have always understood Cilantro to refer to the herbaceous leaves and stems, and Coriander to refer to the seeds, which have a much different flavor than Cilantro. Good advice, and good video. Thank you, Sir.

Wow. Didn't even occur to me to just buy a big bag of seeds at the Indian food store. LOL, I'm an airhead. Especially seeing as how I bought a big bag of whole peas from there for sprouting. Thanks for the tip. We eat vast quantities of cilantro at our house. Didn't know it was okay to plant like that. Just joined your channel. Your information has been invaluable to me, as I'm a crappy gardener. Hope that changes this season!

Very very useful and effective tip of using sand paper to split the coriander seeds. Thanks for sharing. I have basically noticed two types of seeds in the market. One is absolutely round and bigger in size, pale yellow in colour and has been seen since the childhood times. Another one seen frequently now a days, smaller, elongated and comparatively more yellowish. Also seen two types of coriander leaves in the vegetable market, one with dark green bigger broad leaves, said to be grown in hilly areas and another one with smaller shiny light green leaves said to be "Desi Variety". Please guide accordingly.

Actually, my grandmother who wasn't much educated used to rub the seeds with a footware on a coarse cement surface. This is exactly like rubbing the seeds with a sandpaper because the base of the footware and the cement floor were both rough. And she never used to beat or pound with a footware but rub the seeds..the pounding is a recent, mistaken way. Our elders were intelligent no doubt.

From another KZitem channel, I learnt to split seeds into halves using the rolling pin! I followed their technique of mixing seeds with compost, tying them into cloth bundles, keeping in the dark and spraying water on those cloth bundles twice daily for 3 days... None of the seeds sprouted as was told... To make matters worse, the cloth I had used had run colour, so the seeds were coloured blue-green!! Very upset and disappointed I still sowed the seeds into 2 large basins with potting mix. I continued to pour water for 3 - 4 days and there was no sign of germination. I totally forgot all about it when after 10 days of disregard one plant had grown... in the next 3 days 6 had grown... At the sign of the first plant I began watering... At the end of a week I had the 2 basins crowded with new plants... I had totally kept them in shade that they were sort of turning yellow... So I shifted to complete sunlight... They have grown dense and strong... It must be a month now and they are 5 inches tall... I have read most of the comments here and Sir's apt responses are such useful tips... Thank you very much Sir for your patience in answering our questions... Thank you for teaching a new technique to split open seeds ... Sir I am facing an issue with my bumper crop of coriander plants which I shall post as my next comment... Kindly help me out, please...
