Most people like either the Preakness move or that absolute demolition he put on at the Belmont and they are both incredible. It was the Derby was the most impressive in my mind. He ran a good chunk of the race in the last 1/3rd of the pack, took the long way around the track and by the time they crossed the wire he’d broken Northern Dancer’s record and was pretty much flipping the bird to the best 3 year olds in the country.

When one thinks of sport's figures deemed as "The G.O.A.T." in their craft there are always debates...football -Jim Brown or Tom Brady; baseball - Babe Ruth or Willie Mays; basketball, Michael Jordan or LeBron James; hockey - Lemuel or Gretzky; car racing - Dale Earhart or Richard Petty; boxing - Ali or Marciano...but when it comes to horse racing there is no name other than Secretariat! In my humble opinion Secretariat is the G.O.A.T. of all G.O.A.T.S. With each furlong, he gained strength and speed. I calculated his speed at the Belmont Stakes...nearly 38 mph! In all three races he averaged just under this time...and the Belmont Stakes??? Some records are made to be broken...well...not all. No one, I mean no one will ever do what Secretariat did, the way he did it...to win by 31 lengths! As Chic Anderson said...I say concerning the permanent record he set...Secretariat's record is in "a position that seems to be impossible to catch!" Now, watch him and see him "moving, like a tremendous machine!"

I mean, Man o War was ranked higher than Secretariat by bloodhorse, so to call him undisputed is not correct. Plus, people in Europe call other horses the greatest. People in Australia often call Phar lap the greatest. I have heard people call Citation the greatest. I have heard people call Native Dancer the greatest when you count his racing and stud career. I have heard someone say Kelso was the greatest. I mean the greatest is an opinion because there is no way to know which horses were really the greatest as they never raced against each other. People that don't know much about racing will automatically point to the Secretariat since he has a movie and the media loved him. But I mean other horses did great things that Secretariat never did. Which is probably why Man o War was ranked higher as he also did amazing things. Again though, the greatest is an opinion, and that goes for any sport not just racing.

It's like watching a race car and someone is shifting gears. Starts out in last place... then shifts into second and closes it up a bit... keeps working through the gears and finally, Sec hits top gear and just flat-out destroys every other horse on the track. That move on the outside at Preakness is the perfect example. It doesn't even seem possible... but there it is. Incredible.

I will always remember these races. I was 8 years old. And my dream of working with these great horses was born. We moved to a small 5 acre farm. I got my first horse in summer of 1974. This little mare was perfect for a first horse, I learned so much from her. She died a few years later. Due to old age. Got my next horse in 1977, in June if 1978, she gave me a cute little colt. His name was Smokey. We grew up together, I trained him to be a race horse, he was Appaloosa Arabian and he was blindingly fast. He got sick in 1988 and he died then. Even though that was so long ago, I still miss him. Sorry for rambling the great Secretariat and his beauty, strength, speed, and heart gave me a dream, and he put me on my path of being with horses was set. I am hoping someday to find another horse again. Once you find a purpose in life it binds the path for life. Any one who loves horses knows what I am saying. You will have hoof prints on your heart, and never forget your own horses. And if you love racing as I do, you will remember the first horse you ever saw forever. Secretariat was that horse for me. He is/was the greatest male horse. His records for the Triple Crown will never be equaled or beaten.

The Force was exceptionally strong with that one... ... and we'll never know what Flightline might have done. Can't see Secretariat being surpassed, though. I absolutely get chills watching him swallow up the field on the turn in the Preakness. Talk about afterburners! Turcotte was so blessed to be Big Red's pilot.

That comment... hold my beer🤣 . But, in all seriousness, I'm sitting here watching this video again for the two hundred time.... and I' still share a tear. People... I' was there with my parents. Nine yrs young. I' Remember like it was yesterday, screaming at the top of my heart and lungs... runnnnn . My father was a gambler and played horses all the time. I' been to aqueduct ...but too small for me at that time. Roosevelt raceway. Hate it. Sarasota.... once. Hate it. But, Belmont Park was my favorite and too see my favorite horse run there and win is something that I' will alway's remember and appreciate. I' didn't know the full extent of the Triple crown race meaning. All I' care about was SECRETARIAT winning. I' want too pay tribute to "Ruffin". She ran against Foolish pleasure. It was a match race right there at Belmont Park. I' was there with my pop. It ended sad. She was a gorgeous philly. One of the best. I' do believe that they buried her in the infield of Belmont Park. Nevertheless I' have had my share of memories good and bad. BUT THAT DAY JUNE 9, 1973. WILL FOREVER BE THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME. SECRETARIAT IS BLAZING ALONG. .. HE'S FRIGHTENING NOW..... HE'S MOVING LIKE A TREMENDOUS MACHINE..... SECRETARIAT BY 12, SECRETARIAT BY 14 LINKS SHAM IS DROPPING BACK......💪🏾💯👈🏾👶🏿✌🏾✊🏾

Thank you so much for sharing this amazing memory with me. I am 62 now, but in 1973 I was just 15 and suffered three years (1972-75) of endless physical, verbal and other abuse at the hands of four thug bullies at nightmarish San Lorenzo Valley High School in Felton, California. That being said, one of the few highlights in my life was my sweet Grandma and our mutual love for horse racing. We went to the County fairs and Cal Expo (our California State Fair), along with old Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Fields. That spring in 1973, we watch this amazing run of the most incredible horse I have ever had the privilege to witness. Rest in Peace Secretariat and hang tough Ron Turcotte (paralyzed sadly in a horse racing accident in 1978, but happily still with us!)

It breaks my heart that what killed him was laminitis - something that is horribly painful and could not be treated in his time. Now, they can and do treat it - though i don't know what the success rate is or if they cure it. But today, he would have had a good chance of surviving that. His owners did the most beautiful thing when they had him put down - as they could not see him tortured. They killed the golden goose - to spare him. That is love. So i see these videos, think of him, cry, and pray for the good Lord to send him back for a reprise, with Owners as good as the ones he had the first time.

Secretariat was the perfect specimen of a horse. God broke the mold. There will never be another horse that even comes close to what Secretariat accomplished in 1973. NEVER! The last stretch in the Belmont gave me a lump in my throat and tears welled up in my eyes still to this day. It happens every time I watch the last leg of this race. It is emotional watching something you know you will never see again.

I've never been much of a horse racing fan, but it's impossible not to be wowed by the greatest horse racing performances of the century. Imagine what the track record times would have been in the Derby and Preakness if Secretariat hadn't started last.
