The gigolo is one of the great lee Morgan's greatest recordings. A perfect and essential jazz recording. Lee had a very Artistically fulfilling run at blue note.

I am a huge jazz trumpet enthusiast in general, and a big fan of Lee Morgan in particular. His sound is so expressive, involving, and satisfying. Fantastic presentation, too. I'm really enjoying the backstory & biographical details you are adding in! Just liked & subscribed. 🎼🌠

THE GIGOLO was originally released in mono (Blue Note BLP-4212) and stereo (Blue Note BST-84212) on June 10th, 1968. This classic LP was recorded on June 25th and July 1st, 1965 at the Van Gelder Studios in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. PERSONNEL: Lee Morgan, trumpet; Wayne Shorter, tenor sax; Harold Mabern, Jr., piano; Bob Cranshaw, bass; Billy Higgins, drums. Rudy Van Gelder, recording engineer. Produced by Alfred Lion. Cover photograph by Francis Wolff. The latter gave me this classic LP when it was first released, and I still have it, today in near mint plus (NM+) condition. I first met the late, great Edward Lee Morgan (July 10th, 1938 - February 19th, 1972) and his common-law wife/murderess Helen Moore (deceased) at Blue Note Records, which was located at 729 Seventh Avenue (formerly the United Artists building) when I was fifteen years old. I was completely melted butter in Lee's hands. TRAPPED was written by Wayne Shorter, which was recorded on June 25th, 1965. The other selections, YES I CAN, NO YOU CAN'T, SPEEDBALL and THE GIGOLO were written by Mogie (Lee's nickname). The final selection is a perennial ballad entitled YOU GO TO MY HEAD was written by J.F. Coots and Haven Gillespie (Listen to Clifford Brown's version from the LP entitled BEST COAST JAZZ: EmArcy MG-36039 and CLIFFORD BROWN MEMORIAL ALBUM: Blue Note BLP-1526). I was completely crestfallen when Lee was murdered by Helen at Slugs' Saloon, which was located at 242 West 3rd Street between Avenue B and C, the East Village in New York City. I wept openly, and It took a long time for me to get over it. The late, great Frederick Dewayne Hubbard was appearing at the Village Vanguard when the tragedy occurred. Miraculously, Hub lived a lot longer afterwards. I first met Frank when Blue Note Records was located at 43 West 61st Street (formerly the Sofia building). The subway entrance and exit of the 59th Street- Columbus Circle station was also located on the corner of Columbus Avenue and 61st Street. Al Lion was also present. I was given a free Blue Note Records catalogue.

@@AlbumInsights me too! You should take a listen to a tune call “Davisamba” on an Lee Morgan album by the name of “The Rajah”. It’s a nice Funky tune with Hank Mobley on Tenor sax, Cedar Walton on piano, I forgot the others, but they’re all a clan of funky Blue Note guys from the 60s. Reggie Workman might be the bassist, I’m trying to remember. You probably heard it already.

I saw an interview with Harold Mabern. He was on the gig where Lee was killed. He said there was a bad snow storm and that it took a long time for the ambulance to get to the hospital, and if not for that, they might have been able to save him. Lee is one of my favorite trumpeters. I was getting into jazz when I was in high school and I would listen to the jazz station on the radio and they played The Sidewinder, I got up and started dancing around my room, I had no idea who Lee Morgan was, but I knew the music filled me with joy.

I love the subject and scope of your channel. Unfortunately I am put-off by the AI voice. It generally sounds nice but it’s not human. It makes me wonder how much of the program is AI written,. Or do you write the video program and have the AI voice “read” it? I love jazz and the music you are featuring is great. I’ll give it a whirl but I’m a bit skeptical.
