I've used curved needles too, in box-making and also in the applications demonstrated by Sarah. I was a bit clumsy to begin with but improved with practice. It's not a particularly easy technique but it is worthwhile persevering. Thanks Sarah, another useful demo.

I'm basting one of the thickest quilts I've ever made, velvet and corduroy on top and faux fur underneath. The only needle that will do the trick is a curved one, and I'm watching this to double check my technique. Good video!

I use these needles in embroidered box making. I have recently written books, as well as many from decades ago, and not one of them goes into details or visually demonstrates how to use these needles. You do find your way with them and I've never broken a needle, so I feel good about this now I've watched this as I wasn't sure if I was using these needles correctly. Many thanks.

They certainly have their uses. I smiled when many of the comments said they had found it in their grans or mums needkework box... we seemed to have gotten out of the habit of using them. My grand daughter wants to know why almost all embroidery hoops are round when it would be handier if they were square i.e for making a zipped oblong pouch?
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery

You can buy square ones Chris! Stretcher bar frames are perfect for rectangle designs, I actually prefer them to round ones www.sarahhomfray.com/myshop/cat_264747-Embroidery-Equipment.html

I used these for (inside) braces buttons. I'm very inexperienced but think a shorter curved needle would work even better, 2" being the shortest I can find.

I want to embroider some small flowers on a shoe toe (child's shoe). The shoe style is such that it has a few gaps in the sides that I can get my finger through which may help. I will experiment with both a short regular embroidery needle and a curved one, but any suggestions would be most welcome.

For years most of my stitching was with a curved needle. The thread was already attached to the needle. The needle was held in needle forceps , and a second pair was used to catch the end as it appeared. Lots of different sizes of curve and thread to suit different parts of the body. Working in A&E involves lots of stitching people up. Especially late at night, that’s when we learn how to stitch real skin. On drunks who have passed out. They don’t complain or move around, most of the time they just lie there. The only problem is the smell !
