I have no business enjoying this series as much as I do. I don't live in the UK, I have minimal interest in motorways generally, but you make it very watchable. Your delivery veers unexpectedly from concise and informative to wacky and maniacal, and I love it. Abandoned buildings and forgotten or unappreciated large scale logistical projects do tickle my fancy, so it's a great one-two punch.

Another illuminating installment in the series. I'm always intrigued by those little junction "stubs", abandoned buildings, and geographical scars left by our modern way of life. I rather loved the graffiti. I was sad to learn that a previous work had been painted over, but perhaps it had decayed to the point that it was a canvas in need of re-working; much like many a canvas from "masters" over the years. I'm looking forward to the third installment of the November segment. Thanks John.

Where the M49 passes over the Severn Tunnel it is actually on a very low viaduct. I’m led to believe that BR/Railtrack weren’t keen on the idea of the motorway resting on top of the tunnel where it’s at its shallowest point, so it’s actually piled either side of the tunnel and a concrete “bridge” laid over the top. You don’t notice at all from the motorway, but if you walk towards the railway/tunnel access gate alongside the motorway, you can see the structure.

We live In Nailsea near Bristol and have used the M49 every time we went to Wales for our holidays. Got on the M5 at Portbury, using the feeder lane on the motorway, past the turning for Avonmouth, joined the M49 on the inner lane with our Guinea Pigs in their carrier (Yes, we took our guinea pigs on a caravan holiday with us), watching Audis and BMWs scream past, glided past the giant Amazon Warehouse and under the bridges to nowhere to pull up behind the same Audis and BMW dickheads at the island to bear left and join the M4 to Wales.🙄🙄 As part of his job, my husband would have to go into Avonmouth quite often and after about 2 or 3 visits to the same supplier, felt like spewing his guts up because the place stank like an open sewer. When he asked the blokes who worked there how they put up with it, they just said, 'You get used to it, and it depends on which way the wind is blowing how bad it is.' 🤢🤢🤮🤮 Naturally, we passed this delightfully pongy place on our way to Wales and always kept the windows shut, even if it was a hot day. Trouble was, you'd still get essence of shit coming through the vents. My husband fully believed, though, that it was just the aroma of Avonmouth itself, being as it was a shit to drive round. 😮💨😮💨

The reason why Moorhouse Lane Bridge hasn't been "used to its full potential" is probably due to fears over rat-running. The M5 and M49 create quite a significant barrier between North/West Bristol and the industrial areas between Avonmouth and Severn Beach, as there are very few places to cross the M5. The only two major route options are M4-M48-Aust or M5 Avonmouth. There are a few "more direct" roads, but they're all pretty much narrow country lanes through villages. There have long been problems with rat-running, particularly HGVs.

I remember driving up and down the M5 many times in the 90's end endured the roadworks for this motorway but never used it. It just goes to show that councils / town planners are absolutely useless mongs and should have had all that sorted out before construction started. No doubt it's the result of various corruptions, money passed under the table, villas in the Algarve etc.etc. I find it hard to believe those huge companies Amazon, Farmfoods, The Range, Lidl, Next, DHL etc. decided to build there without the promise of that link to the motorway. Sometimes a dictatorship gets things done better but that brings along lots of negatives. There has to be a better way.

The most annoying thing about this debacle is that the motorway was down to 1-lane in both directions and a reduced speed limit whilst the yet-to-opened junction was being built. A friend on mine was stuck on it for 6 hours when an accident occured ahead of them and the lane restrictions meant the police/highways could not let traffic go past - all for it not to be in use nearly half a decade later.
