Wow, I can't believe someone managed to make a whole video out of an accessory that many original PS2 and PS3 owners had! The reason many of us had it was because we didn't have DVD players and controller cord lengths were not ideal for watching DVDs from comfort. Another issue - if you knocked your controller during playback, it would start pressing buttons, accidentally drop it on the floor and it could exit the dvd, starting from the beginning. Wait until he hears that you could get TV on the PS3 and the kit to do so came with a sticker to put on your DVD remote, telling you it's functions in Play TV...

I was a QA on a budget release PS2 game's North American release. Pirates: Legend of the Black Buccaneer. It had already released in Europe, so we only did localization testing and some work to ensure it would pass North American Sony certification. Some time after the game launched, I went back to the publisher for more work, and learned that, all this time, there was a bug in the game where the controls would not function if the DVD receiver was plugged in. It just made the game stop recognizing the controller in port 1. Apparently no one at any point, European QA, European certification, NA QA, or NA cert, tried the game with the remote receiver plugged in, much less tried to play the game with the remote itself.

@@rompevuevitos222 Sold like shit initially but ended up outselling Xbox 360 by *just* a hair! But there's no denying Sony was arrogant back then, and it wasn't about the price. Of course, Xbox 360 came to market first so developers coded for that console first, therefore PS3 was the console that continually got worse ports (all Bethesda games, Bayonetta, Grand Theft Auto IV, Red Dead Redemption, and many more) but also had amazing exclusives.

As someone who’s owned dvd/blu ray remotes for the PS2, PS3, and PS4. @32BitLibrary
3 жыл бұрын
So the “Digital” and “Analog” features were not about the d-pad or analog stick, it was about the specific upgrades of the Dual Shock 2. So the DS2 had actual analog buttons that allowed for pressure sensitive action. The most common example; in MGS2, you can release the square button that aims your gun, and if you do it lightly, you will not fire a shot. Now, if you tried this with a PSX Dual Shock controller plugged in, it’ll fire every time and you can’t put your weapon away without shooting (unless you quickly menu to unequip your gun, which is what you also have to do in the Twin Snakes on GameCube that uses the MGS2 engine without analog buttons on the GC controllers). I know this may get buried in a lot of comments, but you can test some of those games that required the Dual Shock 2 with a PSX Dual Shock and you should get the same incompatible error. This was a cool feature that was kind of under utilized or discussed about the DS2, and every generation Sony does something innovative with their controllers and people don’t give them enough credit. Love the videos!

5:16 If anyone’s wondering why fighting games love the digital input format, it’s because, by this point, arcade stick controllers were being made with joystick levers that were digital in nature, emulating or even directly copying the levers found on arcade machines. So the best way for your down, down-forward, forward+punch input to throw a fireball to read is on a digital interface, MUCH better than an analog stick rolling from a 180° to a 90° or 270° input.

Oh man, this one brings back memories! I've had both the PS2 and PS3 remotes, and my family used them pretty frequently. It was always more convenient to use the remotes than a controller because of the cord issue and being able to toggle captions easily. I can't say I've ever thought of using the PS2 remote for a game, but I definitely remember using the PS3 remote in order to 100% LittleBigPlanet when I was 9. There were various areas in each level that needed multiple players, up to 4, but I only had 2 controllers... and the remote. Long story short, if I remember correctly, my 3 year old brother and I were able to drag that third player around the stage and get it to do what it needed to do, as the lack of analog meant it couldn't walk around. Could still grab things and hold down buttons though!

I'm sure someone's specified this before, but I can't find anyone saying it in the comments. Digital, when it comes to controllers, refers to actual digits. 1 or 0, the button is pressed or it isn't, there is no in between. Whereas, analogue means there is a potential range of movement. It could be pressed a little bit or all the way and it acknowledges the difference between those two. The more you know or something

I'll have you know my DVD controller has 59 buttons. Was originally bought because it could record programs and it allows you to play DVD's from other regions. Truly cutting-edge technology back in the 2000's. The fact it is now completely covered with dust and probably hasn't been used in months isn't the issue here!

I'm already stoked just starting this video. I had this thing (and the OG xbox DVD playback controller) and not once did child me think "I'll play a game with this :)" but leave it to SSFF to tackle the question we all should have had.

I have a hunch in what makes the remote compatible with a game or not. When I had a PS2, I commonly used a PSone branded PS1 dualshock controller. It worked with most games, but there were several that absolutely required a DS2 controller. So as long as it supports a PS1 controller, theoretically it should support the remote in some capacity

In the case of the D pad, “digital” means that its inputs are either off or on; 0 or 1. In contrast, “analog” controls (referring to the sticks) have a finer gradient between all the way off and all the way on (which is how it can recognize a walk vs a run based on how far the stick is tilted). And that all gets confused when a phone game uses “digital D-pad” to mean “it was done with a computer thing”.

This is insane, love it. That controller was a message from the sky telling you to never stop, the world is a fascinating place.

We had one and still have it. The PS2 was in fact used as a 2nd DVD player in our house. Also, the program buttons were used to reorder scenes in say movies like Memento

I did have a very personal reason to buy this remote: the ability to program titles. You see, back in the early days of TV shows being sold on DVD, a lot of DVDs did not have a play all option (Buffy the Vampire Slayer was notorious for this), so instead of having to go all the way back to the menu every time an episode ended, I could program my DVD to play the next episode immediately afterwards by making it go directly to the next episode.

I'm mad about this video for two reasons: I want those SMT games he's has, and as soon as I saw the remote I remembered I had one... but it was almost certainly pitched when I moved house because it used to belong to my Step-dad and he throws EVERYTHING away regardless of whether it works or not...

We used to play 4 players on one of the older WWF Smackdown games with one player using the remote.

Without checking, I am willing to bet there are speedruns where only that remote is used.

The PS2 remote brings back flashbacks of me messing with my friends, altering their controls with the remote while they were playing games on the PS2. Yeah those were fun times

Digital control means that there is only an on or off signal being sent from the input. The D-Pad and some of the face buttons cout as digital, while the triggers on modern controllers typically have an analog component.

Hey uncle Derek, the D on D-Pad stands for Digital! It's digital because it's on/off without nothing in between, while analog sticks are analog, that's why they register slightly adjustments. I also think it's called digital as the arcade sticks prior to gamepads used microswitches, so they were not as digital as the contact pads on gamepads.

Was honestly not expecting Uncle Derek to bust out a Danny Brown album in this video. Mind blown. Great taste in music 🤘

I honestly really do like these remotes for their intended function. Using a controller to control a movie feels strange and usually the triggers and bumpers are mapped to things, so if you brush up against it wrong or set it down wrong then hello next scene. Also doesn't help that Sony keeps on changing what buttons do what in each generation. Having things clearly labeled as their movie related function without having to bring up a big obtrusive onscreen menu to search for what you want to do is very nice.

Ironically the directional menu buttons on most TV and DVD players' remotes are closer to being a proper D-pad than the ones on this thing. Also, gotta love the crazy array of features DVD players had, each with its own button, that virtually nobody used because it's dumb. Like, did they really expect people to shoot movies with alternate camera angles so people at home could pick which ones they wanted??? As nonstandard and easily-abused as it is, Blu-Rays with their custom on-screen menus make so much more sense than trying to anticipate every possible special feature distributors would want to use.
