I was told by a 25 yr + transmission mechanic, the main reason to have your transmission serviced regularly, including those from BMW that are sealed and contain a lifetime synthetic fluid, is that the additives that are within the fluid that keep the seals and other rubber components supple, are volatile and escape over time.
@jimmy4x4socal44
5 жыл бұрын
It’s a sealed transmission with lifetime fluid... Change it every 50k-100k miles... wait a min... why not just make it easy to service if you need to do it every few years.... FYI I do a drain and fill on my trucks every 30k and a filter/drain and fill every 60k and I’ve never had a transmission issue. I run my trucks to mid 400k mark than trade them in. Never a single issue and I’ve don’t this on GM and Ram transmissions. And my trucks spend half their miles hooked to a trailer.

EPA requirements to make it harder for DIYer's to service certain components. They call it lifetime if it extends over 100k miles. The goal is to reduce the amount of fluids coming out of these vehicles which is why the idiots at the EPA believe oil should not be changed for 10k miles. Irony is the failure of these parts creates more of a headache so I have no idea why they go about that route. The service manuals also do not have a suggested interval for trans fluid changes so many folks who are grossly misinformed about this claim modern vehicles do not need a transmission fluid change. Eventually shit fails and people buy newer cars which is the ultimate goal cause apparently newer cars are cleaner which basically stopped being true after ULEV's came into the picture. Backward logic cause the way I see it, a well maintained vehicle stays healthy, and the carbon footprint from building a whole new vehicle is offset by owners who know what they're doing. I've drained and refilled all my Lexus's so far and they're all well over 155k miles with no issues at all including my GX470 that we take rock crawling often. The fluids are truly amazing today if folks would just change them regularly and dispose of them safely.
@TheNatebryant88

Also it lowers the “cost of ownership” for the manufacture to advertise. If they recommend every single item as often as you should then they would be advertised out of business. In addition if you ask most manufacturers what “life of vehicle is” and they will say 120k-150k hints why manuals don’t go any further. The average person trades a vehicle every 3-4 years.

The worst case of a crooked dealer that I've seen first hand. My friend had a Dodge Ram, at around 95000 miles he had a lot of white smoke coming out of exhaust. He took it to the dealer to have it checked out. He was told that he had a hole in one of the pistons. He was told that they sold only long block replacements. They didn't sell short blocks. The dealer wanted nearly $6000 for the long block. My friend told the service manager he would have to think about it. The dealer tried to pressure by telling him if he took off he could cause more damage to the motor. My friend thought it over for a couple of days and finally decided to tear down and rebuild the motor himself. During the breakdown he noticed that a couple of the head bolts weren't torque on as tight as the others. When he got the head off he could see a path on the head that was from a coolant leak due to those loose head bolts. So it turned out he never had a hole in one of the pistons. The dealer most likely knew that it probably had loose head bolts since other customers were probably coming in with the same issue. This happen over 10 years and his pickup has been running since.

My grand pa has 400k on his 67 wagoneer. 3 speed on the column. He has rebuilt the engine before but his rebuisd aren't total over hauls. Its just fix whats broke. He has rebuilt it 3 times. (Partial rebuilds) once because it wore out. 2nd because it was vapor locking in 112 degree weather towing a camper in mountains causeing a valve to burn and that burned valve chunk gouged the cylinder. To get home they dropped the oil pan and un bolted that cylinder from the crank wedged it up with a block of wood then pulled the spark plug wire and drove it home from Colorado to pa on 7 out of 8 cylinders towing the same camper. It made it home. At somepoint he rebuilt it and road raged so before breakin wnded he took his wagoneer up to 120 (wagoneers start to wobble at 80) and it spun a bearing. So he put the used oem bearings back in and they have been in there since. The trans was taken apart at some point but it was in pretty good shape. They just replaced some slightly worn parts while it was apart then popped it back in. The diffs are original.

@PropaneTreeFiddy
4 жыл бұрын
@@dalephillips8250 yes, the trans runs hotter (200f~ in warm climates) and the fluid fouls quicker. It was a sneaky and cheap way to save a few bucks on parts, likely put in place by some corporate hack trying to meet a profit goal. They say its "fine" but any mechanic worth their salt will tell you a transmission should not be running that hot. I highly recommend buying and installing the thermostat and cooler; it isn't that expensive and will greatly extend the life of your powertrain. TrustMe ImAMechanic as a mechanic you should also have the knowledge that many brands, not just Toyota, offer what they refer to as a “lifetime fluid.” Of course, if you want to break down the definition of that, it is highly debated in the automotive industry. Yes, under normal driving conditions they do state these fluids do not have to be changed. If you need further information please feel free to contact me or any other of the dozen auto manufacturers that offer this product. I’d be glad to help! 💜

@@TheJackieLSU . You are correct that most auto makers claim these fluids are lifetime but people need to know that the automakers want to make money from the service department as well as the sales end of it . They want you to need a transmission rebuild at 100 thousand or 150 thousand miles . I tell all my customers to change their transmission fluid every 40 thousand regardless .
@TheJackieLSU
5 жыл бұрын
I respectfully agree and disagree. As an advisor I tell EVERY customer when it is due. Just as I explained in the interview, we exchange fluids based upon time, mileage, and conditions of driving. My long term goal is to keep you as a satisfied customer forever. I can’t keep my customers happy having to drop in engines and transmissions every 100k miles. That does vary from place to place though. It’s about being honest and have integrity with everything you do. From a business stand point you want that customer to return over and over again. It would be bad business to ruin their vehicle and expect them to keep your trust. I’ve found a dealership that shares my same moral values, and expects the same in return. I’m one of the lucky ones. With that being said, my credibility is on point ;)

@@TheJackieLSU I respect your honesty and work ethic . However you have been trained to follow the service manual for service intervals set by the automaker . I see this subject from a different point of view . I see it real world and I do not work for a dealership . Up here where I am in Canada we have more severe weather conditions where condensation builds up within fluids and oils break down quicker . Id rather give my customer piece of mind by changing fluid sooner that the owners manual says to . I tell them oil is cheap . A transmission is not ! I'd rather over maintenance than anything

"Sealed" transmissions are just a marketing claim dreamed up by Toyota in order to get people to buy their products. In their defense, Toyota aren't the only ones doing sealed or long life transmission fluids. My dad bought a 2006 Toyota Tundra with a "sealed" transmission. My brother and I are of the viewpoint that there is no such thing as "sealed" transmissions in the preventative maintenance world. My dad didn't want us touching his truck until the warranty was up so it wasn't until it had about 60,000 miles before we did a drain and refill of the transmission pan. Wouldn't you know it? That "sealed" transmission shifted so much smoother once the fresh fluid had circulated throughout the system. So, what is better in order to take care of your Toyota truck? Changing the transmission fluid on a regular basis as part of a PM program or waiting until something fails in the transmission and then having your local Toyota dealer rebuild the transmission? I'm currently in the market for a 05-07 Sequoia and one of the first things I will do is change the transmission fluid in addition to all the other fluids.
