We have been using BYL for a few years now. This year, my kids will be doing level 1 & level 10. We enjoy this curriculum for the most part. Thank you for this video. I appreciate the ideas. And thank you for being a presence specifically for us secular homeschoolers. ♥️

Yay! Secular homeschooling! I appreciate all your suggestions for changing premade curriculum. My kids are also 10 & 13 so we end up piecing together our own studies using bookshark. Thanks for the ideas...😊

We do a similar analysis as we walk thru the BYL plan. I love that she’s done the bulk of the research for me ahead of time, but allows for tweaking with her blank outline. Loved hearing your thought process!

I am teaching my 7y old twins that money does not grow on trees! They demand every day a new portion (of money), and make a plan for me, where to go to spend it :) - to Dollars stores, Goodwills etc). They plan what they want to buy, and what they want me to order for them online...I teach them about family budget - a micro introduction course to economy ! I teach them common sense!

Thank you for this! I'm starting Level 0 with my 6 and 4 year old as we took this last year slowly with another curriculum, and I have been STRESSING the age/grade thing. It has taken a long while for me to be able to accept to do what works for us. I love home schooling for this reason, and your video has added to helping me relax. Thank you!

We go by the age level. My kids just couldn’t grasp the older levels. They are 9 and we do level 2 which is ages 7-9

Hello I watch your other stations and now I am also doing homeschooling for my two twin boys and daughter of kindergarten age my boys are in the second grade if I did a curriculum like this would I still get the same level III or should I get the level below it? I feel like I’m all over the place in trying to figure out how to do this along side working full-time and still doing eBay LOL

Hello former mentor teacher!! How fun to "run into" you like this!! I have a little one starting kinder this year, and I am exploring BYL as an option. Thank you for mentioning your kids handwriting struggles and how you adapted the curriculum. My little one has poor fine motor skills and it is such a battle to practice workbooks.

This fall will be our third year with BYL, on levels 2 and 0. I tweak a lot like you do, and add things in! I agree with you that Story of the World is extremely eurocentric with a heavy Christian worldview. Last year for level 1, we read SOTW, but also added in Curiosity Chronicles as an audiobook. This year, I plan to use CC as our main history, with the accompanying activity books, and maybe supplement with SOTW. We also skip the poetry (glad we're not the only ones!), and add in extra science and language arts. Sometimes I wonder why I purchased the curriculum with so much tweaking, but really, it's a great starting place.

We used BYL level 3 this past year but instead of story of the world we replaced with Curiosity Chronicles. It's not that BYL is religious per se, it's more that SOTW is not secular. I feel like I'm in a bind though for this coming year because curiosity Chronicles has not released the new volumes yet... If anyone has a good suggestion for what to use instead, please share!!!

Bookshark has a complete "reading with history" curriculum set-up. They're secular and literature based.

@@katrina3560 I find Torchlight speaks more to my secular needs than bookshark, which to me suffers the same problems as BYL... both are great, don't get me wrong.. But they still rely too heavily on Western/Christian materials... Bookshark science is "neutral" which is problematic for me as well. For other reasons, Torchlight was not a good fit for us... Basically no curriculum is perfect, so you tweak and modify to make it what you need...

I was wondering if you could elaborate on why you chose level 3 rather than level 5 for this year? Level 5 is early American history specifically, while level 3 has a somewhat broader view of the world (still american-centric but not wholly). Is this why you chose level 3 for your kids? Is there a problem with level 5 and diversity?

Wanting my kids to hear more than just the “white” perspective on history is one of the big reasons I want to homeschool my future children (I don’t have any kids yet). It frustrates me when much of the homeschool curriculum available mainly focuses on a white, Christian perspective.

Level 3 also uses story of the world. BYL is secular but SOTW is not.
