Owning a BMW M235i, I can say that getting the claimed 27.4mpg urban figure is easy. In fact I sometimes go above (30+)! You just have to adjust your driving style - have a very light foot, accelerate slowly/barely brake (let momentum slow you down) and understand when to let off the throttle to allow momentum and gravity to keep you moving. Oh, and to absolutely let rip when you feel like it ;) life isn't always about fuel economy!
@peanusbenis5631

Rubbish. I had an M135i and I could never break 25mpg in town and that was with me accelerating pathetically slow and inciting many an angry overtake.

James Batchelor Actually accelerating slowly will give you worse fuel economy than accelerating "quickly". I don't mean you should floor it from a stand still but using 2/4 of the throttle and getting up to the speed limit and start to cruise is better than using 1/4 of the throttle and then cruise. Also something to note is that this is better in the long run, so if you're driving alot everyday then it will help you. Other things you could do to improve fuel economy is to: -skip gears when going up 1-2-4 or 1-2-3-5 -let go of the throttle when approaching a red light and let it roll as much as possible. Shift down when nessecery and try to keep the rpm above 1200-1300. Keeping it above will result in 0 gas being used but if it drops below 1200-1300 the car will automatically use gas to keep the engine running/not stalling -Try to always use the highway and avoid the city when driving as driving on the highway will result in less fuel being wasted because you're driving at a constant speed and you're not stopping and accelerating all the time as you would when driving in the city - I don't recommend doing this but driving behind a big truck on the highway really helps with fuel economy as driving behind a big truck will massively reduce air resistance/drag. So if you need 30% throttle to stay at 100km/h, you might only need 20%-15% throttle when you are driving behind the truck. And obviously the closer you're to the truck the more pronounced the effect will become. But as I said, this is not something I would recommend unless you're driving an Audi or BMW :)

James Batchelor : Yes 100% . The people poo pooing your claim don't know what their high power cars are capable of in terms of fuel economy , largely due to never really trying to get max mpg . In the 1980s i had a ford capri 3.0 v6 with poor fuel figures (15-18 mpg avg was common ) yet using Hypermiling tips i got regular 30+ mpg . I once got 40 mpg trying very hard . Today i have VW golf + 1.6 d with a combined figure 52 mpg (not blue motion ) i get avg 700-800 miles on 1 tank ( 57-61 mpg avg ) The most important thing to get good fuel ( especially a high power car ) is as you say very gentle on acceleration & reading the road well ahead will save a lot of fuel . At what cost ? In time saved in an average journey in the real world , next to no difference , with all the congestion it makes little difference how quick you take off from the lights you have to slow down just as quick .

Great video as always Matt. I have owned three cars from new and compared the official MPG to real world (almost obsessively) on all of them. I've done that to the point of not trusting the trip computers (which are also out by about 10%) and instead by brimming the tanks and using maths. I've come to the conclusion that there isn't a need for a new test. Real MPG figures can be calculated using a simple formula. Manufactures claimed MPG x 0.8 = real world MPG figures. I'm not joking, it is surprisingly accurate!

To achieve the claimed numbers is in a way mostly a test of willpower. I owned a 335i for 11 years and it had a claimed 7.2l/100km and once when driving about 890 km in one run I achieved 7.3l/100 km and on the way back 7.4. I achieved it by accelerating moderately, obeying the speed limit, coasting whenever possible, never flooring it when overtaking. I also had a really good number for city driving for many years but during the last few years I didn't have the willpower but instead feeling like using the power in a more aggressive way, of course the range shortened.

Carwow's worst video yet... First of all what is up with the cuts every 10 seconds? A few such jokes would be nice, but so many are just distracting. Second of all, you never really show what was your driving style for the trip computer mpg info. There is a huge difference between driving 80 km/h in sixth and driving in busy city traffic. Also less than 10000 km is a very small distance to give proper statistical results. More appropriate would be to show what the trip computer calculates while setting the cruise control on different speeds and in different gears, everything else is really subjective IMO.

What this video omits is that trip computers tend to be optimistic too. On my 2011 Polo 1.4 it's usually about 4 mpg over my brim to brim calculation: 43.2 versus 38.95 on my last fill-up (city driving in summer). Yet testers tend to take the trip readout as gospel.

The real time mpg indication in most cars isn't right either, so the demo in the video is probably still optimistic for real world consumption. Brim to brim measurements are the only way to be sure what the car is really consuming. My last two cars from the VW group ran at around 10% optimistic, which turns a good 55 mpg figure into an average 49.5 figure, but still pretty good for a 200 bhp estate. Also wondering why diesel is specifically targeted for the real world emissions - thanks to direct injection and higher compression ratios to improve fuel efficiency in petrol, they're getting more and more like diesel in their combustion behaviour and emissions, to the point that soon all new petrol cars will need particulate filters just like diesel has had for years.
@McDiezel-iu9sv
6 жыл бұрын
The fuel comsumption gauge in the car is also a liar. You can add a minimum of 10% on that figure to get the real fuel consumption(Km/l). In MPG less distance/lower numbers.This should be tested by an independent organisation/gov in real conditions and not in a labratory by the manufacturers themselfs.

It is not as if I always drive slowly either, if I clod it on motorways all day at 70mph plus a bit it may drop to 52mpg. It looks as if we'll have to hang onto it for a bit if what you are saying is true we will be hard pressed to do better. Cheers, Richard.

Youre comparing manufacture figures with the fuel computer, BUT often the fuel computers are also very optimistic. How about comparing manufacturer's figures with a pump to pump test, to see the reality, rather than comparing one company generated figure (Book estimates) with another company generated figure (fuel computer) A friend has just reported his fuel computer says 71 mpg and actual pump to pump is 49!!
@jucarioa

Nik Wilson Properly said. I don’t get it why there has to be so much confusion and controversy over figures. I’m glad there will be an “honest” and palpable way on measuring MPG, L/100km on newer models. I guess that as long as the injectors are not dirty, plugged or leaking, and the fuel pressure regulator is working correctly, that computer should estimate the actual fuel used comparing it to a pump to pump test indubitably.
@johnkeepin7527
6 жыл бұрын
To Nik Wilson. I think they are always optimistic. I usually keep records on a pump to pump method, usually buying from the same place each time. That said, pump accuracy is another subject - e.g. these days they are allowed to used 'Standard Temperature Adjustment' (STA), so the metered value can rise or fall as the delivery temp varies (a standard litre is 1 l at 15 ˚C), whereas with older ones you could get a bit more when it's cold or vice versa.

65 MPG IMP (used in Europe) actually equals 54.12MPG US (the real Miles per Gallon measure). 44 MPG IMP = 36 MPG US, so about right on! 30 MPG IMP = 25MPG US, again right on! Also, best MPG acceleration, is a combination of low RPM and high torque (in the torque band). The slower you depart, MPG won't always get better. At some point you might as well do the entire journey in 1st gear, ramping up from a stop to 20MPH where you need to shift into 2nd gear. As you can see in the above scenario, your MPG would be horrendous. Most of the time best acceleration is gained by using medium throttle, and rev to about 3,5k RPM before shifting; preferably shifting from first to second to third, and skip fourth and fifth, to low RPM 6th where you will cruise at that speed.

3500RPM shifts thats way late. In pretty much any Diesel you shift at 2000RPM and in pretty much any petrol that isn't a rotary you shift at 3000RPM or lower. In some of these modern Petrols with low down Torque you shift at 2000RPM.

The engine isn’t tested out of the car, it’s tested in the car in a rolling road, nice try Matt, but a pretty poor fail there. (Emissions and fuel economy testing has been my day job for 29 years). Strictly they aren’t manufacturers claims either, they are the test data the manufacturer MUST use.

"complaining about not being able to achieve their car's claimed economy figures and because certain models have been found out to be more polluting than expected" Nice dieselgate reference

Dieselgate had nothing to do with fuel economy figures, it was harmful emissions like NOx that they were masking. If anything the trickery they used makes engines more efficient in real world driving conditions, for instance the EGR valve was being used during the emissions test to comply with regulations, but closed in most conditions in the cars actually sold to the public, which increases NOx emissions dramatically but actually improves fuel efficiency and reliability in Diesel engines. Fuel consumption and harmful emissions are two different things and sometimes to improve one you've got to harm the other. A lot of people saw their fuel consumption increase slightly after they took their cars in for the recall.

In my experience you can come very very close to the claimed mpg but as Matt stated it’s just not realistic to drive in that manner on the road

The extra urban figure from the old system was at an average speed of 47mph not 70mph like most people do on the motorway. This actually makes a massive difference to mpg for cars of normal size engines but for cars of large engines with no consideration for mpg it makes very little difference. For example independent tests on a Mercedes 450SEL 6.9L did 22mpg at 30mph and 19mpg at 70mph. My personal car with a 1.5l uses twice the fuel at 70mph vs 30mph.

Well what I've seen is that the biggest offenders are small turbocharged petrol engines while diesels tend to be much closer the estimated figures and many times almost true

Fuel economy really depends on how you drive too. My MPV gives 9 kmpl in city driving and gives 15kmpl (higher than its certified mileage of 14 under standard test conditions) on highway driving while going at 70-80 kmph. IF i go at 100 it falls to about 12 kmpl.... 120 10 kmpl and 140 its 8 kmpl. Its really how you drive that causes such variation in mileage.

This is horrendous. Under what scenario did you ‘measure’ the MPG in this video?? I’ve been able to easily exceed manufacturers MPG with all 4 cars I’ve owned.

My 125cc scooter should do 120MPG (extra urban) but in reality: - up to 110MPG (if not exceed 50-55 MPH and gently with throttle) - up to 100MPG (urban) - up to 95MPG if driving top speed and full power (65MPH/11kW) Still better deal than a car.

Lexus IS250 - extra urban claim 36.1 and I averaged 38 on my commute for 3 months. Managed well over 50 quite a few times too, and over 60 once with some creative use of lorries and the not-very-loud pedal. Also had a 2l diesel A4 as a courtesy car when some idiot rammed the Lexus, drove it less miles than the IS, the computer in the car claimed 47 mpg but I had to put nearly 4 litres more in the tank after a week... Most other cars I've owned have been easy to match/beat the figures on occasion but never as an average. Except maybe my old Punto because getting towed doesn't cost fuel...

09 Insignia 2.0tdi 47mpg (45 in winter) . 06 Astra 1.4 petrol 45mpg. 02 Corsa 1.2 44mpg. 04 Focus 2.0 ST170 34mpg. These are the figures I got over many many fill ups calculating it manually myself filling the tank brim to brim. Mostly mixed driving apart from insignia 80% motorway, 1800rpm @ 120kph (75mph ish).

I've noticed this with electric vehicles too. Whenever I watch a British review of an EV, they quote the advertised range (like 200 mi for the Leaf) and then give a far lower real world range that they determined by driving it. A real world range which just so happens to line up with EPA numbers more often than not.

I checked the numbers for my car, a Seat Ibiza 6L form 2007 with over 170k km, and they are pretty accurate. I dirve a lot on the autobahn and even there it stays under 6l/100km.
