For clothing industry where small pieces of leather is used it is common that leather is used as byproduct. So basically there is no focus on good quality. But for the luxurious side of the clothing industry and car industry cows and other animals are farmed in special environments for their skin so that it can not be damaged. So in other words its not always a 'byproduct', because some industries are focused on getting good quality leather for consumption. The less demand of consumers the less supply there will be, which is good for the environment.

You stated that in 2020 JLR is introducing Vegan leather as an alternative to leather because of consumer pressure. That is not true, premium car buyers still want leather. Try and sell your used luxury car with a synthetic interior, it will be hard to shift, dealers hate them. Of the Velar and Discovery, only 1% of sales worldwide for these models over the past two years are purchased with non leather. And to call it vegan when it is all oil based material is disingenious. If you want a classy non leather finish, forget about these fake look alike leathers, use Alcantara, it is classy, very durable, and popular with customers and dealers. As for recycled materials, none of them use 100% recycled content, but they never tell you that. The most is usually 35% recycled, the rest is virgin material. Indeed many use far less than 35% but can still call it recycled. This "greenwashing" is causing enough concern to force the EU to legislate shortly to the effect that anyone selling recycled must certify a minimum of 25% recycled content. Recycled you say is cheaper because it reuses material. In fact it is generally 15% more expensive because of the multiple complicated chemical processes that are required to get recycled material to the necessary specification to be able to perform to specification. To call these alternatives Vegan is strange, because they all use oil as the base of their construction, nothing environmental about that..

There's no truly better way to do this. Faux leather is good because we like leather for its suppleness and luxuriousness as well as how it comfortable it is, not because you want to brag about the fact that your car seats are covered in dead, chemically-treated animal skin. As such, there shouldn't be anything wrong with a synthetic, less-expensive, vegan solution to this because we care about those aforementioned qualities, not where it comes from. On the other hand, if you killed a cow to eat it, you might as well use all of it, including its hides and skin.

Actually, meat consumption in on the rise. In the US, it is at an all-time high, but that's not the worst of it for anti-animal product types. Beside this, there are already more than enough vegan options. It doesn't drive people away from meat consumption.
@craig2web
5 жыл бұрын
@@iventonart9474 I'm not sure it's at an all-time high here in the U.S., but if that's actually the case, I think that's simply a matter of our population being at an all-time high (partly due to immigration). But the birth rate is steadily falling, so that may start to reverse itself soon. Some developing markets may have a temporary increase in meat consumption, but as those populations become better educated, they will also become more interested in alternatives. And realistically, the market drives how many vegan options is enough, and the interest clearly seems to be on the rise. I live in a pretty rural area, and even around here, the local BK temporarily sold out of the new Impossible Whopper due to higher than anticipated demand. :-)

@@craig2web They are becoming better educated. That's why they're consuming more meat. They're moving to more advanced farming, highways are being built to truck meat products quickly, things are scaling up and spending power is increasing, and people are using their newfound spending power to buy foods they couldn't have as kids. In reality, the more developed a nation is, the more red meat they generally eat, because that's what humans want. That is a fact. Honestly, the reason why Western populations are in decline and why eating habits might or might not be changing is because we're generally in decline. At the same time, they're advancing. At the moment, demand is outstripping artificially limited resources, and that determines the market. It's not like we're at the bottom of the barrel and their are no more cows left in the world. Prices are being forced up artificially with taxes and regulations to reduce "carbon footprints", it's become more expensive to eat what we've been eating. Of course we're going to look for alternatives. Meanwhile, China is eating our lunch....Literally! Also, there are no "ifs" in science. "If" is used by people with wild imaginations. People don't care if what they eat is or isn't bad for them. It is human nature to eat what is tasty. So, as spending on what we enjoy eating increases, the consumption will likely increase with it. That is in general. You cannot avoid that with public service announcements and school programs. The level of meat consumption and the obesity rate in the developed Western world is several times higher than the underdeveloped world. In general, yes.
