Have you found a packet of long forgotten flower or vegetable seeds and wondered if they are worth sowing in your garden? You won’t find a definite answer to this seed conundrum online. In order to find out if your seeds are still alive and viable you will need to carry out your own germination test.
Here I show you how to test the germination rate of your own seeds using just a paper towel, some water and a plastic box. I also carry out my own seed germination experiment on some really old herb and vegetable seeds I found in a mysterious tin on my new allotment. Watch to the end of the video to find out whether my 34 year old seeds will grow, or whether they are only fit for the compost bin!
Seed survival is dependent on both the type or variety or seed, and how the seeds have been stored. Temperature, moisture content, pests and diseases can all have an impact on how long the seeds will survive in storage. If you want your seeds to survive as long as possible you need to control these different variables. I show you a simple trick to extend the life of your seed stash for as long as possible.
