My tomatoes are about an inch tall indoors but suddenly they started drooping, same for some of the watermelon seeds I started. I have been putting them outside when the temps are between 45-65 degrees and they were doing fine but suddenly today they are drooping and dying. I started feeding them miracle grow performance organics because I see their first true leaves coming up, but I am trying to figure out what it could be before I lose the last months worth of work. I think I was not giving them enough light and they got leggy which is why I started putting them outside every day. They have been growing for 3-4 weeks and are only an inch tall so maybe I didnt give them a good enough start.

James Brann this is a great question. I just planted some seeds last night (bell and habanero pepper, green beans, and cucumbers) in my basement, where the temp is a steady 60°ish. I have a grow light on, and a heat pad. This is my very first attempt at gardening, so I’m not holding out too much hope.
@biffjohnson7107
4 жыл бұрын
Update: while my bell peppers seem to be doing pretty well, my habaneros are lost except for 2 or 3 plants, out of the 12 seeds I started. Same with my hot cherry peppers. I started them in my basement where it’s always about 60° and dry. I’m using a grow light, spec’d per Gary’s guidance, and a heat mat. I hope to have a small greenhouse next spring, and some better results. ✌🏻

Gary- I followed these guidelines last year and had lots of great peppers and tomatoes. I will do it again this year. Only tip I would add- Start Peppers sooner than you think, and Tomatoes later than you think. Reason being the grow rate. Peppers grow slowly, Tomatoes grow fast. Peppers can use a little extra time, Tomatoes take to the outdoors better young (about 6"). We had a very late start last year here in Colo. Z-5 due to late frost/snow. Shortened our already short growing season. And we usually get frost/ snow late Oct. We got it early Oct. But I had plenty to harvest. Colored Bells didn't quite reach their full size and color- but I had a ton, and they were awesome. Tomatoes were really too tall even planted deep. They did good, but could be better. Going to boil water for my "Jiffy Starting Soil" and get my Peppers started today! TY Gary for all of your help!

I started my peppers in Feb last year and most of them had to be harvested green in October. This year I started them just before Xmas, my determinate tomatoes the 3rd week of Jan and the indeterminate tomatoes yesterday. I don't have grow lights so I've learned to germinate seeds in a tray of starting mix sitting on top of the computer and then transfer them into small pots or cells when the biggest ones start to reach the cover. I expect to re-pot at least 3 times before I plant them in the end of May (zone 5a in Ontario), at which time they should be the size of the biggest ones the local nurserys sell. BTW: I've learned a lot from your videos. Thanks.

Gary, great/informative videos. Two questions: 1) Is the six-cell starting pack that you used with the tomatoes you thinned big enough to hold those plants for the six to eight weeks before putting them in the garden? 2) I have a shelf and light set up similar to yours and I used in my kitchen last year but that was a bit inconvenient. I was thinking about moving the set up to my garage which has a steady temperature of 50-55 degrees (I monitored it thru last winter, which was a killer here in Missouri zone 6b) If I germinate with a heating mat, would that temperature be OK for the seedlings?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
4 жыл бұрын
Those bigger 6 cells are big enough to hold the peppers and tomatoes that is why i decided to add them to the seed shop. The standard small 6 that create 72 cells in a flat just get really root bound. You can also error on 6 weeks too before they would go out in your garden. And yes you could use a heating mat. They might grow slower but that would work. Hi, Gary!! Your peppers and tomatoes looks very short with true leafs. Mines look a bit leggy. What causes that?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
4 жыл бұрын
That is because my plants are getting really intense light. Thats one of the things I talk about. They get leggy because the light is not intense enough and they grow toward instead of leafing out. Please visit The Rusted Garden Homestead Seed & Garden Shop at www.therustedgarden.com for all your seed starting supplies, seeds, oils, harvest bags, journals and more. THANKS!

It seems it takes a long time for tomatoes or peppers to grow. I had some seedlings that started growing and then stopped growing. The plants didnt die but didnt grow any bigger all summer. Do you know why or what caused this.

Thank you so much for sharing! I can't wait to start my spring seeds. We've had temperatures reach 80° F this last week so I don't believe we are getting much cold weather this year. I plan to start my seeds in the greenhouse soon, just in case we do get temps that reach below 40°f in the next month. Thanks for sharing great info as always!

I dont use them. I found the created more of a fun place for fungi. If you can keep them watered the domes arent needed. If you are going away they might help initially for germination. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thanks Gary. You had just moved into your new home so that really was a lot to take on so quickly. And that sounds like a great series. And as a future idea, I'm interested in growing for flavor. I have had a few crops some years that were just blah in the taste department and that can definitely happen with tomatoes.

Do you use lights, or indoor tents to start your seeds and seedlings for more difficult plants. Tomatoes seem to be very robust and grow easily compared to other plants.

@Kyle Sheridan I'v used White Vinegar rinse after hot soapy water wash, rinse again, dry in full sun on a table top. Not on the ground. Works great, peroxide works well too. I never reuse my cells if any disease got started during their use. I try to reuse seed start cells as long as I don't split them when handling. Happy gardening! God bless.
